If Uber has nothing to hide, what’s the big deal?

Taxi services have been around for quite a while and they do come in handy, like when getting to the airport or even if you have had too much to drink. They are reliable but can be expensive. That is when Uber steps in as an alternate to a taxi service that can come to your location with a tap of an app. Uber started in Paris in 2008 and is an app that allows the user to contact an Uber driver to come pick them up at their location. The app includes an estimate of how much it may…

Candidates’ antics affect registered voters’ decisions

Ronald Reagan lived by a philosophy that many Republicans live by, “Thou shall not speak ill of a fellow Republican.” Though if you were to tune into a national news station like Fox News, CNN or ABC that are covering the election, on the Republican side it does not seem that they follow Reagan’s philosophy, even though they claim to follow his ideology on how to run the country like the way he dealt with the economy. Many people look at their TVs and think that this election season is a political circus with Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio…

Vocal Vikings team captain heads to national contest

To bring home trophies from competition feels great, but knowing that those trophies count on going toward nationals is an even greater feeling. Miguel Porfirio, team captain of the Vocal Vikings, will compete in Costa Mesa, California, from April 1-10 in a national competition known as Phi Rho Pi. Porfirio will be competing in POI, prose, impromptu and poetry. “After all this hard work, I can’t believe it’s finally paying off,” Porfirio said. For Porfirio this is a milestone after working hard at each tournament to bring back points that got him a position for nationals. At nationals, Porfirio will have the…

Uber, taxi, towing services all available for beachgoers

If sun and sand are on your list of Spring Break activities, you need to keep several things in mind, especially when it comes to simply getting there and back safely. Before heading to the beach you want to make sure you have a Beach Parking Permit. Though not all beaches in Corpus Christi require a permit, most do. Parking permits cost $12 and can be purchased at any Stripes store, H-E-B, CVS Pharmacy (for students who live on the island), Dick’s Sporting Goods and Academy. But there are other methods of getting to the beach, such as using Uber. To…

Birthday banquet funds student scholarships

It was a night filled with the smooth sound of jazz and a feeling of giving back. Patricia Walter, chairwoman of the Communications, Languages and Reading Department at Del Mar College, used her 55th birthday to host a banquet to raise funds for scholarships. One of Walter’s favorite musicians, jazz saxophonist Tom Braxton, performed at the Feb. 5 event at the Center for Economic Development. Braxton was at the Music Department recently giving a clinic for instructor David Irving, and playing with the ensemble group. He was asked to come and perform for Walter’s birthday banquet, playing smooth jazz music he created.…

Vocal Vikings hit the beach

Although they normally travel one weekend a month to compete, the Vocal Vikings will get to stay home and play host to the competition with Speech on the Beach. Set in the Coles Building on the Del Mar College East Campus, Speech on the Beach is a favorite for many competitors because they get to stay at a hotel near the beach, which is perfect to relax after a long day of competition or just to forget about college work and be around teammates. “Many students haven’t been to the beach and this might be their first time. Speech on…

From the South to the North

Del Mar student hits New York City with Vocal Vikings The idea of traveling to a different state on a weekend when a student should be studying is pretty crazy, although traveling with the Vocal Viking Squad was more than crazy fun, something that students need before finals. Traveling to New York with the team for four days was more than a blast, especially when the whole team has been traveling to different cities to compete; now it’s a different state. After a day of travel the fun begins as we explore Manhattan. Taking the Long Island Rail Road, with…

Medical workers get lesson in Spanish language culture

Cómo te sientes? is a common phrase used by nurses and doctors. Those who attended a free Spanish for Medical Fields seminar, sponsored by Del Mar College’s Communications, Languages and Reading Department and designed to build attendees’ Spanish speaking and listening skills, learned that and much more at the Nov. 20 event. Some students were at the seminar to learn introductory Spanish but others were there to help build their knowledge of the medical field. The instructors presented vocabulary pertaining to the human body and scenarios related to hospitals and clinics. “I learn medical terms in Spanish, phrases and questions.…
