This year Al Toth, an administrator at Veterans Memorial High School, and his wife, Linda, self-published a book called “Dead Secrets” under the pseudonym L.A. Toth. The novel follows Detective Jack Mango after his life took a drastic turn from being shot while protecting the governor and losing his wife to cancer. He moves his family from New Mexico to Serrano, California, because of his new job as police chief. ‘The Gift of Fear’ a learning observation worth reading about

Gavin de Becker developed the threat assessment tool called Mosaic, which is used by the Supreme Court as well as police departments and schools across the country to predict whether someone will turn violent. His consulting firm, Gavin de Becker & Associates, has consulted everyone from Ronald Reagan to the CIA, and includes numerous Fortune 500 companies. I found myself glued to de Becker’s “The Gift of Fear” from the very first page. The story itself is a well-written book of how a young boy at age 10 began assessing violence, and by age 13 could predict the outcome. The Mosaic…

The club meets from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on the third Friday of each month in Room 434 of the White Library. Participants discuss ideas and their impressions as well as ask questions about that month’s book. “Sometimes just asking that first question can get everyone’s ideas going,” Flores- Muñoz said.…

‘Daughter of the Drackan’ immerses readers in novel’s world

“Daughter of the Drackan,” the recently released novel and first of a two-book series, is an astounding introduction of a dark world experienced by a woman who demands to rule her own life. The dark fantasy debuted author Kathrin Hutson well, representing the population of well-written literature for self-published authors. Keelin is born human but raised by drackans, beasts that despise mankind, and she is the only one who can ensure destruction or redemption of both races. Although she experiences strange blackouts and wakes in blood, her drackans cannot tell her why they occur or what happens when she disappears.…
