Known for assisting students with writing services both online and in person, the Stone Writing Center (SWC) will be moving to a new location, the 4th floor of the White Library after this semester. The move is the result of the demolition of the SWC’s building and the Writing Center staff plans to have the center up and running in its new location by summer.

Several factors contributed to the demolition of the SWC’s building which included necessary restorations totaling over $1 million – $250,000 for asbestos repairs and $1 million dollars in air-conditioning upgrades due to the age of building.

Charles Miller, DMC superintendent of Building and Grounds, said, “Honestly, it (the SWC) was standing in the way of the new Music Building addition.”
LuAnne M. Gillett, assistant instructor of English said,” As far as we are concerned it should not affect student use and no employees will be affected by the change.” Gillett said she believes the center will benefit from the larger space provided on the 4th floor of the Library. Gillett also said that the SWC computer lab would actually be growing from 35 to 50 computers for students.

The Stone Writing Center’s mission statement is “ committed to helping students and other members of the Del Mar College community becomes better writers by strengthening their writing skills.”

Through these values the staff has offered thousands of students free services such as tutoring, computer stations, workshops, labs, and podcasts.
The center also offers assistance with any other writing assignments whether it is in economics, English of any level, résumé help and other types of writing.

The SWC has grown from the 80s and 90s to the present, adding new services and equipment each year including private tutors, computer upgrades and new technology including “podcasts” that can be uploaded directly to student’s iPhones and iPods.

The SWC’s Spring 2012 hours are: Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m-1 p.m.
