Give your Valentine a special day to remember

Every year in early February, grocery stores fill with chocolate and the color red, while couples seek out new ways to spend Valentine’s Day. For those who want to do something unique for their significant other, a simple dinner may not be enough. While purchasing flowers, chocolates, jewelry and small gifts for a special someone holds a strong place in the holiday’s traditions, thinking outside the candy box can lead to a romantic night.

Del Mar College has a special treat for lovebirds planned for Feb. 17, when singer/songwriter Mitch Clark will perform in Richardson Performance Hall on East Campus. The show, which runs from noon to 1 p.m., is free and candy bars will be handed out after the event.

Del Mar also hosts a hot-and-sweaty run for couples who enjoy particular “hot and sweaty” activities. The Valentine’s Day 5K takes place at 3 p.m. on Feb. 12 on the East Campus Track by the Gymnasium. All runners must check in by 2:45 p.m. on the day of the race.

For those who enjoy jazz music, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Performing Arts Center will host an event featuring the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra on Valentine’s Day. Reserved-seat tickets start at $20 and are available at tamucc.tix.com or by calling the Performing Arts Center box office at 825-2787, according to whatsupcc.org.

Dragonfly Restaurant, at 14701 South Padre Island Drive, is accepting dinner reservations, which include a revamped menu created for Valentine’s Day couples. The restaurant will provide a four-course meal for $100. Reservations are available on Feb. 13-14 only. Call 949-2224 to make a reservation.

For couples who enjoy a more lighthearted Valentine’s Day, the Latin Comedy Jam features Steve Trevino at the American Bank Center at 8 p.m. Feb. 14. Tickets can be purchased at select H-E-B locations, Walmart or ticketmaster.com, as well as the American Bank Center Box Office. Prices begin at $19.50, according to americanbankcenter.com. A pre-show VIP dinner also invites couples to reserve a place for $119 per couple to partake in a large dinner before the show. The deadline to reserve a table is 5 p.m. Feb. 6. The “Second Saturday Sing-Along Piano Show” begins at 9 p.m. on Valentine’s Day at Brewster Street Icehouse. Tickets are $7 and door open at 8 p.m., according to brewsterstreet.net. This Valentine’s Day Concert is available to all ages. A $3 surcharge applies to minors, but children younger than 10 get free admission (one child free per paid adult). Valentine’s Day offers many possibilities, whether walking on the beach for a romantic evening beside the waves or in a restaurant eating dinner with your significant other. The large variety of opportunities and events allows for a special evening and a night to remember.
