Summer blockbusters aim to please

With the weather quickly heating up as summer approaches, it’s a great time to head to the movies. Fortunately, there are several big hits to keep us entertained this summer. Here are some of the highlights:

‘X-MEN APOCALYPSE’

The X-Men movies have undeniably become a blockbuster series to be reckoned with and “X-Men Apocalypse” seems to be bigger than the rest of them. With an all-star cast playing your favorite characters facing off against a villain who is considered to be the biggest and baddest of the bad, it is hard not to get excited about this movie. I will be in the front row of the first showing, ready for the mass destruction to ensue. “X-Men Apocalypse” hits theaters May 27.

‘THE CONJURING 2’

As a fan of horror movies, I couldn’t make a list of movies to look forward to this summer without adding “The Conjuring 2.” Only one trailer has been released, but that trailer showed that this movie promises to be a hair-raising supernatural horror flick, which is what the director (James Wan) is best at. Wan has a talent for creating sinister atmospheres around normal people, making your skin crawl without a plethora of jump scares. If this movie is anything like the first one, it is going to be great. “The Conjuring 2” will be released June 10.

‘WARCRAFT’

Say what you will about video game movies in the past, but “Warcraft” actually looks like it has a chance at being good. “Warcraft,” the first movie based on the“World of Warcraft” universe created by Blizzard, pits humans against orcs in the land of Azeroth. The two sides, however, will have to set their differences aside when they face a common enemy. Despite the fate of video game movies in the past, I remain hopeful that this movie might pull through in the end, with a great story and good characters to support that story. “Warcraft” will be in theaters June 10.

‘FINDING DORY’

I remember watching “Finding Nemo” a lot when I was young and never getting tired of it. I have always wanted to see a sequel to the movie, but back then Pixar didn’t really make them so all hope seemed lost. Now in 2016, longtime Pixar fans will finally be seeing more adventures of Nemo, Marlin and Dory. In this movie, Dory will be going on a quest to find her family, with Marlin and Nemo tagging along. “Finding Dory” will be swimming into theaters June 17.

‘THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR’

“The Purge” will be returning to theaters this summer with the third movie in the series. If you’re looking for a mindless action movie with a cool idea for a story, look no further. An American senator is attempting to eradicate the Purge from America, which gives her a lot of enemies to worry about on the night of the Purge. After a betrayal, the senator finds herself on the streets with just one bodyguard. This movie will be an entertaining way to pass the time when there’s nothing else at the theaters. “The Purge: Election Year” hits theaters July 1.

‘GHOSTBUSTERS’

At this point, I’m sure everyone is sick of reboots, but I’m adding this one of my list of things to see this summer. Even if you have a sore spot for reboots you can’t deny that this movie at least sounds interesting. With an all- girl cast taking the reins, I really just want to see what they’ll do with the series. This reboot was actually written by Dan Aykroyd, one of the original Ghostbusters, so there’s a reason to be excited for the movie. “Ghostbusters” will hit theaters July 15.

‘STAR TREK BEYOND’

“Star Trek Beyond” is the third movie in the Star Trek series.

Not much is clear on the plot except that the crew of the Enterprise seems to be caught in the middle of a war. The first two movies were surprisingly good so I expect that “Star Trek Beyond” will bring more of the same to the screen. “Star Trek Beyond” will be released July 22.

‘SUICIDE SQUAD’

Ever wanted to see a band of famous villains band together to fight an unknown threat? “Suicide Squad” will pit villains like Harley Quinn and Deadshot against a yet-to-be-revealed threat. The movie will feature Ben Affleck as Batman and Jared Leto as the Joker. So far, the trailers for this movie have been fantastic and have done a great job at creating hype around the Internet. This movie is sure to be a fun time for audiences when it hits theaters Aug. 5.
