Big Texas photo exhibition hits campus this semester

The Texas Photographic Society’s annual Members Only show will be held at Del Mar for the first time.

The exhibit, now in its 32nd year, will open with a reception from 6-8p.m. Sept. 20 in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery. More than 40 artists will show a total of 50 works in the show, which runs through the fall semester.

The opening reception will be preceded by a panel discussion at 5 p.m. featuring Debra Barrera, an artist from Houston who works with a variety of different mediums. Contestant juror Catherine Couturier, a gallery owner in Houston, will then honor the award winners.

“There was nothing specific I looked for,” Couturier said of judging the entries. “I went with what was the best photograph and not with what was just an interesting subject.”

The first-place winner will be awarded $500, second place $300 and third place $200. There will also be five honorable mentions.

Sarah Sudhoff, executive director of the Texas Photographic Society, said narrowing down the artists was a challenge.

“Of the hundreds of submissions only 42 photographers were chosen,” said Sudhoff, who added that all the works in the show will be for sale.

The opening reception will have light refreshments and a cash bar. The exhibit is free and will continue through Dec. 4. It will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays.
