Let the intramural games begin…

Del Mar College’s Intramural Sports program held its Fall Kickoff in the Harvin Center on Sept. 4.

“Every year we’re trying to build and bring in more people,” said Kristy Urbick, intramural director. “So (we’re) just trying to reach out and get different types of people to come in and participate.”

The sports booth had a wheel of prizes, flyers and registration forms as a way to bring attention to the program and get students interested.

Abriana Quintero, a kinesiology major, visited the booth to register for the 100-Mile Challenge.

“I’m a kinesiology major so I decided to get some exercising in,” Quintero said.

Brandon Ybarra, a liberal arts major, visited the booth to get information on the fitness challenges.

“I walk and bike a lot, and I can actually put a goal to see how much I can actually fit into it,” Ybarra said.

The program offers a variety of sports to not only keep students healthy and active, but to give everyone the opportunity to be a part of something on campus.

The first intramural sport to take place this semester is 6 on 6 volleyball. The league starts Sept. 10 and runs through Sept. 26. Games will be played from 3-5 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. You can join in with a team of your own or be placed on a team. All teams are coed and open to any skill level. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate.

More upcoming sports this fall include basketball, flag football, soccer, kickball and tennis. Smaller sports such as badminton, Frisbee, four square and the 100-Mile Challenge are also available.

Urbick said the department will also be adding free yoga classes from 1-2 p.m. Fridays this semester in Room 202 of the Kinesiology Building. No registration is required for yoga.

Registration for other events takes place at the Intramural Sports office in the Gymnasium, Room 108. The office is open 2-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. You can also register on the day of the event you wish to participate in. The registration will occur 30 minutes before the event. You must have a current Del Mar Student ID with the current semester sticker on the back.
