District 1 applications still being accepted

Regents seek to fill seat following death of Gabe Rivas

The Board of Regents has extended the application deadline for the District 1 seat until Sept. 22.

The decision to extend the original Sept. 8 deadline another two weeks was “due to a holiday weekend, back-to-school schedules and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” Board Chair Carol Scott said in a Del Mar College press release.

The board began the search for a new member following the death of Regent Gabe Rivas III, who died Aug. 5 from complications of COVID-19.

“We will strive to find the best representative for District 1 and someone who supports Del Mar College as Mr. Rivas did during his service to the College, its students and the community,” Scott said.

Individuals interested in filling the seat must submit all application materials by 5 p.m. Sept. 22.

Candidates must be a resident of Texas for at least one year and in the District 1 for at least six months. All candidates must be registered to vote and submit required letters to be considered.

“The board has filled the unexpired term of board members in the past and we are using the same process,” Scott said. “The current board will make the selection after a review of the applicants and an interview that will be conducted in public.”

After a review of all applications, the final decision will be made at a special meeting on Sept. 29. The candidate selected to fill the District 1 seat will be sworn in on Oct. 13 and will take the seat for the regular meeting in October.
