Honor society wins four state awards
The Del Mar Gamma Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was recently recognized with four state awards at the PTK Texas Regional Conference for their involvement in the community, as well as their efforts to improve their chapter. The chapter received an award for its “Honors in Action” project, which focused on pollution along the coast. The “Honors in Action” project allows PTK members to develop action-oriented projects that better the community through research. Del Mar student looks to the future, hopes for change After living in the colonia of Petronilla for seven years with her father, Del Mar student advocate Yvette Reyes remains hopeful about the living conditions that continue to affect her family life. “We have water wells, but we have to buy our own water,” the social work advocate student said. “We can’t drink, we can’t cook with the water … the water’s pretty slimy, you can tell the difference.” Reyes and her father regularly buy five-gallon containers of water a day, but she also mentions that it’s not the worst…

Captain Whitney Curry takes students by surprise when she places a raw anchovy on her tongue, as they all stand around laughing and recording with their phones. Professor Lillian Bass and Biology 1409 students set out on the floating classroom, the Archimedes Educational Cruise, to witness the evolution of living organisms.
