With nights getting longer and days getting cooler, fall was in full swing on the Del Mar campus. The annual Fall Carnival was held in the Harvin Center on Oct. 28 and featured dozens of booths sponsored by clubs. Booths at the festival offered fun Halloween themed activities such as ring tosses, pumpkin decorating, photo booths and a dunking booth. We’ve all heard “you are what you eat.” But is it possible to still be what your grandparents ate? This theory was explored at the genes vs. destiny seminar given at Del Mar College on April 22 by Del Mar College Associate Professor Zaldy F. Doyungan, Ph.D. Doyungan explained the concept of epigenetics, which is the study of the regulation of gene expression. This concept explains how who we are is at least partially determined by the choices our relatives made. Mark your calendar for two amazing events that will take place here on campus brought to you by the Cultural Programs Committee. Children and young adult author Diane Gonzales Bertrand will be on campus. She is a Hispanic author who writes about young Latinas and how they set career goals as college-educated women and show how spontaneous these women can be. Bertrand be give a professional talk, titled “Discovering Tu Corazon in Writing Children’s Books,” to DMC staff and students at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Venters Building, Room 100.
