The Del Mar College Dental Hygiene Program is providing dental services to the public at no cost. Students in the program will provide the services and be supervised by faculty members to guarantee an efficient experience for all.
The eligibility of patients is based on the educational and clinical needs of the dental hygiene students, and to be considered for treatment, patients must schedule a “qualifying appointment” with DMC faculty.
LeeAnn Campos, administrative assistant for the program, said students must meet certain prerequisites.
“The patient evaluation will determine if they qualify for any of those requirements,” Campos said.
It’s essential for the clinic to get as many patients as they can so students can complete the required hours for the program.
“It operates as a full-time clinic with one patient after the next when students get to that level, so it’s crucial to have patients for the students to meet their requirements,” Campos said.
The Dental Hygiene Clinic offers a comprehensive array of services, such as medical history reviews, blood pressure screenings, intra-oral examinations, dental assessments, periodontal assessments, education, oral cancer screenings, radiographs, fluoride treatments, selective polishing, conservative periodontal therapy, dental hygiene therapy and dental sealants.
“The clinic offers a lot of services that usually cost a lot even with insurance, so I think it’s a good idea for the public to utilize it to help the students as well,” dental hygiene major Briana Rosas said.
“I have been to the clinic a few times to help out my classmates and I always had a great experience,” Rosas said. “It doesn’t feel any different than being at a normal dentist’s office.”
The clinic runs from September to mid-December and then from mid-January to May. Operational hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays as well as 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, with appointments required.
The facility is located in Room 125 of Health Science Building I on Del Mar College’s Windward Campus at 4101 Old Brownsville Road.
