Deadine approaching for Del Mar’s 60th Annual CAIN National Show

Del Mar is preparing to celebrate a major milestone as it hosts the 60th Annual CAIN National Show, continuing a long tradition of showcasing innovative contemporary artwork from across the United States that is judged by a special guest juror.

This year’s show will be judged by Tabitha Whitley, an accomplished artist known for her vibrant art and work with art organizations nationwide.

The CAIN National Show will award $10,000 to artists who are handpicked by Whitley. The selected winners will have their art become a part of Del Mar’s permanent collection.

The competition is open to all artists nationwide with the exception of full-time Del Mar art faculty. Each artist may submit two to eight original works. Two-dimensional works, including drawings, paintings, printmaking, watercolor, and photography must not exceed 72 inches and must arrive ready to be hung.

Sculptures under 50 pounds and measuring under 60 inches are also welcomed. Sculptures must not require suspension from the ceiling, though the Cain Gallery can supply pedestals for most 3D pieces.

Submissions will only be accepted online via CallForEntry.org. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30. The base fee for two entries is $20. Each additional entry is $5. All fees are non-refundable.

The selected artists will be notified via email on Jan. 8. Any accepted artwork must arrive at Del Mar College by Jan. 25.

Whitley will provide a lecture to those interested in her process and learn more about contemporary art trends on Feb. 12. Following the lecture, the official opening for the public exhibition will be held on Feb. 13 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will be on display until April 17.

With an upcoming six decades of history behind it, the CAIN National Show continues to serve as a vital platform for artists strengthening Del Mar’s legacy in supporting the arts.
