Del Mar poet laureate Alan Berecka returns

Students and community members are invited to an evening of creativity and expression at the White Library on Heritage Campus on April 15.

In celebration of National Poetry month, DMC Libraries is hosting an open mic poetry event, offering a voice for all experience levels to be heard.

The poetry open mic will be from 5:30-7:15 p.m. in the White Library Café.

The event will feature local Poet Laureate Alan Berecka. An accomplished writer with three published poetry books and another on the way, Berecka is known for his thought-provoking performances.

Berecka, a retired Del Mar College librarian, used to host these events several times per semester when he worked at White library. Berecka tries to come back often for these types of events despite his retirement.

Berecka often travels to festivals across the country to give readings of his published works for crowds of people.

“He has a very narrative style,” organizer Sabra Woodard said of Berecka’s writing. “Some tends to center around faith or crisis of faith and political themes.”

The Del Mar Library Café will extend its hours for students who want to sit back with a cup of coffee for this poetry reading

The event is free and open to the public, giving the community a chance to engage in storytelling and connect through the love of art.
