Recognizing exemplary scholars

The Richardson Performance Hall filled with applause April 21, commending Del Mar College students for their accomplishments and achievements as exemplary scholars. The 65th Recognition Ceremony brought together teachers and students who earned honors and praise, as well as a place in DMC forever. Four of those were the Hall of Fame Inductees. “It still feels really surreal,” said Kimberley Kissoon, a biotechnology major. “I’d never think I would be inducted. It was really great to know someone takes notice and takes pride in what we do and how we represent Del Mar.” Zipporah Brown was congratulated by people on…

Civitas Learning to help students on journey to success

When students seek help in classes, think about withdrawing, apply for the next semester or decide to switch majors, that information is stored, but it’s not easily accessible and the information doesn’t benefit students. Yet. Civitas Learning is coming to Del Mar College, and it will organize information, which will help students in the registration process, as well as in their personal journeys as they take classes, according to Augustus Alfonso, the chief information officer at DMC. The first step in the process is called Civitas Illume, a predictive analytics system that will organize things such as what students do…

Get lost in the jungle again

It takes more than the bare necessities to remake an animated Disney classic and transform it into a live-action success, of course with a good blend of CGI. If compared to the book instead of the animated movie, “The Jungle Book” was more than adequate. In fact, some would call it wildly entertaining. Given a 94 percent rating by Rotten Tomatoes and an eight out of 10 rating by IMDb, it’s obvious that the young Neel Sethi made for a fantastic jungle boy. Even besides well know actors such as Scarlett Johansson (Kaa) and Bill Murray (Baloo), Sethi took hold…

Want a job?

After college, the first thing students want to find is a job, and that’s what the Coastal Bend Career Fair plans to accomplish. With more than 50 employers attending, both on the East and West campuses, Del Mar College’s Career Development Office and Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend will present opportunities for students, including full-time, part-time, summer jobs and internships. Students should bring a resume and cover letter, and present them to prospective employers. “(The job fair) is specifically designed for students who are graduating to make them seem visible to the employer,” said Veronica Adkins, DMC career development…

KEDT celebrates grand opening of new building

Behind the doors of the new KEDT building and through the glass window of the broadcasting room, the Del Mar College low brass ensemble played beautiful music that escaped through any radio tuned to 90.3 FM. Day 3 in KEDT’s grand opening festivities involved students from the DMC music department with Donald Pinson, assistant professor of trombone and low brass. The experience was different for students who are accustomed to a concert setting. Del Mar College raises scholarship funds at Bernie’s Famous Crawfish Boil

DMC raises stalking awareness

You never know who’s watching. That’s the warning representatives from the Corpus Christi Police Department Victim Assistance Program gave to Del Mar College students on Jan. 27. The event, held in recognition of National Stalker Awareness Month, focused on cyber stalking and how not to be a victim. “Privacy settings are no good. A lot of the things you know, or think you know, because you are tech savvy, you’re the first ones to come in crying because you said or did something you shouldn’t have,” said Debra Garcia, a victim case manager with the Victim Assistance Program. “Once it’s…
