Artist Barbara Simcoe serves as judge for annual drawing, sculpture show The Art and Drama Department kicked off its 57th annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show on Feb. 17, with a lecture given the previous day. This year’s guest juror for the show, Barbara Simcoe, an artist and professor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, gave insight into her life and vision for art using multiple mediums such as oil paintings and graphite. Del Mar offers many different services to students each semester for free or at a low cost. All of these services are offered at the Heritage Campus with some extending to Windward and Oso Creek as well. Here are a few services offered to students. Cultural Programs presents retired pilot Lt. Col. Olga E. Custodio, “Lessons from the Flight Deck: Overcoming Doubt/Imposter Syndrome,” Feb. 8 at the Richardson Performance Hall. Custodio completed U.S. Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training and graduated in the top 5 percent in her class with fighter qualifications. She went on to fly the T-38 as an instructor. After Custodio ended her military career, she went on to fly for American Airlines. Texas Jazz Festival returns for second time this year

People attend a recent Jazz Fest. This year’s festival is set for Oct. 14-16. Del Mar College’s Jazz Band will close out the 61st  annual Texas Jazz Festival with a performance on the HEB Stage at 6 p.m. Oct. 16. Jazz Fest got its start at Del Mar College in 1959, when Skip Vetters and Joe Gallardo called Gallardo’s uncle Al Garcia to perform with his jazz group at Del Mar for Jazz Club. Heritage Park Market Days offers new venue for local businesses

Workers with local bakery Get Baked tend to their table selling vegan and gluten-free baked goods at the October Market Day. The first Saturday of every month, Heritage Park teams with small business owners to host Market Days, an event for vendors to gather in one place and sell their products. The idea of a small business gives people hope in a time where the typical workday has been deconstructed after the pandemic. Apply now for graduation

The deadline for graduation applications is Oct. 5. Students planning to graduate this semester must apply for graduation whether they plan to attend the ceremony or not. Students should speak to their adviser to request a signed degree evaluation to make sure they meet all requirements to graduate and complete an application packet. Requirements include a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and completion of 25% of degree requirements. Graduation packets can be found on the Del Mar website. Students participating in the ceremony must check the RSVP box on the application. The fall graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m.…

Campus life returns for fall

Del Mar clubs got a chance to recruit students during Rush Week at Heritage and Windward campuses. Clubs offer the chance for students to make community on campus. Each Registered Student Organization, or RSO, does and on- and off-campus service project to help support other Del Mar students and the surrounding community. Aspiring photographers sell work at exhibit

Professor Jeff Jankos’ “Light and Lens” exhibition features 65 photographs taken by 23 students taken over the course of 12 weeks.  The exhibition, which opened Aug. 25, allows visitors to purchase the photos. “I think it’s important for a photographer to learn how to take great photographs but to also learn how to market their work to the public,” Janko said. “It gives the students a chance to invite the public to their exhibition and to meet the public and talk about their work.” Each semester Janko teaches three photography courses: beginning digital photography, intermediate digital photography and advanced digital…
