Scholarship applications for the 2019-20 school year are now available. Any student in need of financial assistance should apply. “Eligible students who apply for a specific scholarship go through a selection process that takes into consideration criteria such as GPA, financial need, credit hours, enrollment status, as well as any other information that may be applicable to that specific scholarship,” said Elsie Odom, scholarship coordinator. “Having said that, students have to have at least a 2.0 GPA or a GED equivalency and will be enrolled in at least part-time (6-11) hours to be eligible to apply for Foundation scholarships.” The…
The federal minimum wage has not increased above $7.25 since 2009. Lately there has been a lot of controversy surrounding this issue. Many people have demanded an increase to $15 per hour, to make what they call a livable wage. While the minimum wage should be raised a little, it should go nowhere near that high. If minimum wage were to increase to $15 dollars per hour, or higher, the cost of living would skyrocket. Employers would have to raise the price of their products to compensate for what they would be losing by paying their employees so much. They…

Several Del Mar staff members and other volunteers spent the morning Nov. 17 preparing eggs, sausage, biscuits and other breakfast items for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Twice a year, members of the DMC chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education volunteer their free time to support those going through difficult times. “This is a community project,” TACHE member Rosa Reynoso said. “We’ve done this several times and it’s like the first time every time.” TACHE has been doing this project for at least 10 years. “It’s a very rewarding experience,” Reynoso said. “It…
Del Mar’s Industrial Process Technology Association (IPTA) joined up with a few other groups to clean up the beach out at Padre Balli Park. The Oct. 6 beach cleanup, which was originally scheduled for two weeks prior but was postponed due to rain, was hosted by LyondellBasell Adopt-A-Beach. Adopt-A-Beach recruits groups, such as Del Mar’s IPTA, the Kiwanis and local high school clubs, as well as individual volunteers to help clean up the beaches not only to protect sea life, but also to help beautify the Texas coast. “The IPTA believe in helping your community out and service projects,” club…
With all the rain the Coastal Bend has received lately, there has been an increase in the mosquito population. The city of Corpus Christi has been making an effort to protect residents by enlisting Vector Control to spray for mosquitoes. While this does reduce the number of mosquitoes, there is still the chance that you will be bitten regardless. There are ways to protect yourself against mosquito bites though, whether you are at home or on the go. The most effective way to prevent mosquito bites is insect repellant. It can be purchased at many supermarkets and drug stores, such…
Let’s face the facts: college, work and life are stressful. Often, this stress can lead to depression or even thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in college students. There are alternative ways to deal with stress though, some even as close as your own home. One of the most popular ways to deal with stress is yoga or meditation. Meditation can be done practically anywhere and as often as needed. It allows the body and mind to relax and causes the stress to melt away. There is no one specific way to meditate. Some people prefer to focus on a…
