The Siren has officially returned for the Fall

Del Mar College’s literary magazine Siren returns this fall for its long-awaited release, the first issue since the Fall 2019-2020 semester. Copies of the DMC student-run magazine will be available across all Del Mar campuses starting Monday, Oct. 27.  The magazine, first launched in 1996, has been a platform for student creativity filled with short stories, photography, art, and poetry. Like many student organizations, Siren faced challenges during and after the global pandemic, including a shortage of editors and contributors. Del Mar College alumni continues to connect people with music at guest piano recital

A night full of reunion was celebrated at Del Mar College’s Wolfe Recital Hall where president of St. Joseph’s University, Donald R. Boomgaarden, performed a guest piano recital on Oct. 23. Del Mar College Counseling Center ready to help students

Between balancing classes, jobs, and social lives, many students find their mental health taking a backseat. At Del Mar College, the Counseling Center is working to change that. Located on the second floor of the Harvin Center, the center offers free services ranging from one-on-one counseling to wellness workshops. The goal is to promote mental health, emotional resilience, and wellness throughout the campus community. “We’ve got several services available to students,” Counseling Center Director Jessica Edwards said. “We offer individual counseling, we offer couples counseling, we offer crisis intervention. Viking Fest returns with upgrades, live music

Viking Fest sails on as a solo opportunity this year for students to raise funds for all academic endeavors. This year’s event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Windward Campus. In the first year it began, Viking Fest paired up with the Registered Student Organization Fall Carnival as only one singular event for students to attend to support Del Mar College student programs. Foghorn earns national honors in Washington D.C.

Several Foghorn staff members attend MediaFest 2025 in Washington D.C. Oct. 14-17, learning more about student media and new trends in news coverage and technology, bringing home a lot of information, and a lot of awards. MediaFest is hosted by the College Media Association, the Associated Collegiate Press, and Society of Professional Journalists. The Foghorn snagged 26 CMA Pinnacle awards, including first place awards in breaking news photo, video newscast, feature video package and comics, and a first place Best in Show advertisement. Dia De Los Muertos memorial hosted by Del Mar College

Dia De Los Muertos is a day to honor loved ones who have passed and commemorate with an altar, typically celebrated on Nov. 2. Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus will host a morning program and community ofrenda, or altar, on Thursday, Oct. 3, in the White Library, Room 218 from 10 a.m. to noon.   This event has taken place every year since 2004, with ofrendas placed at every campus, but the main morning program will take place in the White Library.   The White Library hasn’t always hosted the ofrendas. Indiana University professor fired over student media

On Oct. 14, Indiana University Bloomington made the decision to fire the Indiana Daily Student’s faculty advisor Jim Rodenbush. They also ceased printing of the IDS but will allow for stories to continue to be published online. The decision was made after Rodenbush refused to have his editors ensure that no news stories ran in the homecoming issue of the IDS to make sure that the focus stayed on homecoming and Indiana football’s high ranking.  The printing of the physical copy of the IDS has been being rolled back for some time. DMC is hosting its first Pink Swap this October to raise awareness for breast cancer. Students, faculty, and staff can participate at the dining areas of each campus simply by bringing anything pink. Whether it is pink shirts, pink candy, or even pink pencils, get ready to think pink so you can show out for this special month! Del Mar Culinary students practice skills at weekly lunch at Oso Creek campus 

Del Mar’s Culinary program doesn’t just involve knife skills and how to deglaze a pan. There’s also a lot of paperwork. The program teaches students how to manage a commercial kitchen, with a focus on food production and quantity cooking, where students practice large-scale cooking to serve 100 guests. The program hosts a weekly lunch every  Thursday led by a new student manager each week. Del Mar College is the only college in South Texas that prepares students to run their own restaurant. Valdar’s Market partners with the Coastal Bend Food Bank for SNAP application event

Students at Heritage and Windward campuses received application assistance applying for SNAP food benefits and the Healthy Texas Women program during a two-day outreach event in partnership with Valdar’s Market and the Coastal Bend Food Bank’s Social Services team.  “Our goal is to inform and help as many students as possible with information on resources and application assistance,” said Viviana Flores, Social Services lead.  The outreach event was held on Sept. 23 -24.
