Paddles, pigskins and plenty of power plays
As intramurals come to a close this semester, students met during three consecutive days to play the sports Table Tennis, Ultimate Football and Viking of the Court (1 vs. 1 Basketball). Although meeting new people and socializing is a big part of intramural sports there are many other things that it offers. Digital media major Wesley Febre said, “I was able to make friends, get better at my craft, and I was able to play different sports that I hadn’t tried.” The variety of sports that intramurals has to offer is something that Del Mar students appreciate a lot. “I…
The goal of the game: Win
Soccer players kick it in the gym during 4-day tournament Many students who do not usually compete in intramurals stopped by the gym to take part in the four-day 4-on-4 indoor soccer tournament. Two goal posts were set up in the gym as teams did all that they could to rack up more points than their opponents. Most of the intramurals events are male dominant but that did not stop female Viking Amor Flores from joining the boys on the court. “Soccer is the sport I play. I don’t care who it’s with,” Flores said. Although students were constantly making…
Students kill it at volleyball
Del Mar College crowned a new 4 on 4 volleyball champion this semester. Team 4 Dudes, 1 Court, 1 Ball, defeated team Edge! 2-1 in the best-of-three final series Nov. 8 in the East Campus gym. Game 2 started off close and tight with both teams alternating points again, and not allowing for a big deficit. Team Edge!…
Saturday basketball tourney intense
3-on-3 Basketball wrapped up at intramurals with team AMP1 defeating team Blues Clues to win the championship in a rare Saturday tournament. Standard 3 on 3 rules applied, with a “make it take it” format, and baskets counting for 1 point inside the 3 point line, and anything outside the line counting for 2 points. In game one of the three-game series, Victoria Rabagos, the only female participant in the series, outshined everyone on the court. She scored 8 of the team’s 15 points, splashing in a couple of long-distance shots, mid-range jumpers, and scoring a couple of buckets under…
Football tourney spans 4 days
Football was the theme for intramurals as October drew to a close. Players met on the field to compete in a four-day 5 vs. 5 flag football tournament and the Quarterback Challenge. The flag football tournament consisted of three teams going head to head to see who would come out on top. The tournament began with team White facing off against team Shirts. Team Shirts won and continued on to the final round against team Blue. Team Blue gave it their all but fell short against team Shirt, which took first place in the tournament. Team Shirt was composed of…
Strategic play dominates this game
Mental ability took priority over physical as students played Capture the Flag for Intramurals. “I know everyone says games are like chess and stuff, but this game is definitely like chess. We all have to be in good spots, we have to sacrifice just like in chess. This is really strategic,” student Benito Torrez said of the Oct. 8 competition. In Capture the Flag, rival teams must evade the other team’s side of the court to retrieve the ball and return to their side of the court all without having their flags being pulled. If the player’s flag is pulled…
The 5D’s of dodgeball
Del Mar College hosted its first intramural dodgeball of the fall semester on Sept. 25. Students gathered for a time to take their minds off of classes and just have fun. Dodgeball is a game where people try to eliminate opponents on the opposite side by throwing the ball at them. Some say it is a good sport to play as it form of anaerobic exercise, promoting strength, speed and power to the body, which gives you a lot of energy. Zach Riley, 21, participated in the dodgeball game to take the edge off of school. “It’s a stress reliever…
Students give it their all on court
Students of all majors came together to compete against one another over four days in 5-on-5 basketball. Each day consisted of two teams made up of different students each time. In the final game the team sporting black jerseys faced off against the team wearing white jerseys. Unlike past semesters, teams were unnamed. While the first few days of the tournament were cordial, the final day was intense. “There was better competition, both teams were even out, but they had an upper hand. They had more shot selection and we had more drive and foul contact, but honestly they won…

Kinesiology instructor Judith Phillips has been named this year’s recipient of the prestigious Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence. Phillips said she was surprised to win the award, named after a professor who taught at Del Mar for 42 years and given to professors who show the passion and dedication that Creighton did. “It’s very humbling to look out and think that my peers think that much of me,” Phillips said, “I didn’t expect it.” Phillips, who has been teaching for 31 years, said she was inspired by her sister, who is also a college instructor, and to this…
