Journalism students excel at state contest

Del Mar College journalism students took home 23 awards including first place in three categories at the recent Texas Community College Journalism Association conference in Austin.

Former Foghorn photographer Tera Elwell placed first in newspaper sports action photo, former Foghorn Managing Editor Amber Quaid placed first in magazine photography and former Foghorn cartoonist Kai Hernandez placed first in magazine layout/design.

Del Mar College competed against seven other community colleges, including Tarrant County College, Amarillo College and Tyler College, at the event, held Oct. 29-Nov. 1.

The event, which partnered with Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers, two of the largest national college journalism associations in the U.S., offered hundreds of sessions, presentations and workshops for students over the four-day conference.

Photoshop 101, Know Your (Copy)Rights and Editor Therapy were just a few of the many sessions held that weekend.

Journalism students Samantha Douty, Cayce Berryman, Meagan Falcon, Jonathan Garcia, Kira Hays, C. Robert Gonzalez, Patrick Luce and Angela Whiteley attended the event.
