The grand reopening of the Del Mar College Student Hub will be at noon Feb. 29 in the Coleman Student Center on West Campus. Formerly known as the Palmetto Room, the Student Hub will feature study rooms and will allow students to learn about the services and resources offered by the college.
The Del Mar office of Student Leadership and Campus Life, or SLCL, initiated these renovations after hearing multiple student requests for a place to study, hang out and relax.
“It’s important for students to have a campus life because they spend so much time on campus,” said Beverly Cage, director of SLCL. “We wanted to create a space that would be inviting but also function as a meeting space for clubs and organizations, and events for students.”
According to Cage, renovations began in fall 2015.
“The renovations cost was covered by the Office of Provost VP of Instruction & Student Services and student services fees, as well as Title V purchasing 10 laptops computers for student usage,” Cage said.
The Student Hub is being used to improve the campus life for West Campus students. The Coleman Center is notably vacant for most of the day. By opening the Student Hub, SLCL hopes to encourage students to spend more time on campus.
“Here, it’s all technical. Everyone here has an agenda and a job, so if students are going to be here, they have a reason to be here, to study,” said DMC West student Leon Pena. “I do see people sit here (in the Coleman Center) and do work, but it’s kind of difficult because of the noise.”
In addition to the laptops, the quiet study space available in the Hub offers another incentive for students to use this space.
The grand opening of the Student Hub inside the Coleman Center is set for Feb. 29.
All students and staff are welcome to attend the grand opening of the Student Hub. The opening will include a tour and refreshments will be served.
