Whether it’s your first time on a college campus or your final semester, college life can be a time of fun and excitement; however, it can also be a time of great stress, anxiety and depression.

Del Mar College offers a free counseling service to students, as well as offering private consultations to collegiate students. The East Campus is home to three full-time counselors licensed through the state of Texas.

“The counseling department works to promote mental health, emotional resilience and wellness throughout the campus community,” said counselor Johanna Torres.

Counselor provide help to students for issues ranging from anxiety and depression to couples counseling. The counseling department has been open for five years and according to Torres, there has been a drastic increase in the amount of students they have seen come through their doors.

“The number of counseling center appointments increased by 429 percent from academic year 2015 to 2016,” she said. Their records indicate that these services reached over 4,000 students in 2016.

The Counseling Center will host a Let’s Talk event Sept. 13 in the Harvin Center. They will meet with students and answer any questions that may have, as well as distribute fliers and information about the organization.

West Campus also offers a part-time counselor by appointments only. On East Campus, counselors are available from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Fridays in Room 233A of the Harvin Center. For more information, visit www.delmar.edu/counsel.
