Assistance available to households with income of $60,000/year or less
Tax season is here, and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is offering free income tax filing assistance at the Del Mar College Heritage Campus.
Del Mar’s VITA lead coordinator Adelfino Palacios Jr. said the DMC location has been doing this for almost 20 years. However, this is the first time back since 2020 due to COVID.
Palacios said accounting major students are working on the tax returns. The students from Del Mar’s Accounting Program have been certified through the IRS.
Palacios said the VITA program has a partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and the United Way. The IRS provides the tax software to use for the process.
It is open to the public for those who had a 2022 household income of $60,000 or less. Drop by the Venters Business Building, Room 204, for assistance. It will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. The filing deadline is April 18. The Heritage Campus site will be closed the week of spring break. Walk-ins are welcome.
Bring a photo ID, a Social Security card or individual taxpayer identification number letter for all individuals who plan to be listed as dependents. W-2s, 1099s (including 1099-G for unemployment received if applicable) and any other tax related documents for 2022 are required. All 1098 E&T forms for educational expenses will be needed if applicable. Childcare provider names, addresses, phone numbers and tax ID numbers will be needed as well. Also, if these do apply, forms 1095-A, B, and C health insurance coverage statements will be required. If possible, please bring a 2021 tax return copy.
If anyone plans to use direct deposit for the refund, proof of bank account routing and account numbers, such as a voided check, will also be required. The tax return preparation process takes two to three weeks to complete.
There are also a few other locations in Corpus Christi offering free tax help such as Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the United Way of the Coastal Bend. A few of the locations are drop off only but do require additional forms to be filled out.
