SGA plans first meeting of semester

Students encouraged to attend, give input

The Student Government Association — a club you didn’t know you were already a member of, and one you didn’t know you were already contributing to.

According to group president Sofia Jimenez, the SGA is one of the most important clubs to be a part of because, technically, all students already are.

“When you pay your tuition, part of that tuition is student service fee. It comes partly to our Student Government Association organization and with that money we are able to do things for the students,” Jimenez said.

Jimenez and the rest of the student government council constantly strive for student participation for this very reason.

Jimenez said the ultimate decision on where the funds go is decided on at these meetings by the students who attend.

“Anything that funds are spent on is first brought up to the student body at SGA meetings and students get a voice and vote for that. So when students don’t show up, their voice isn’t heard,” she said.

As Jimenez simply puts it, “I would want to know where my funds are going.”

SGA meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month, are open to all Del Mar students, and no registration required.

The first one will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in Conference Room 1 of the Harvin Center at Heritage Campus.

They can be attended either in person or virtually via Zoom.

Students are encouraged to check their Del Mar email for Zoom links and for more information regarding the upcoming meeting,

Jimenez said the club is always looking for opinions, and the best place to get them from is the students.

“The more minds, the more creativity, the more suggestions, the more open doors,” she said.
