Electric car enthusiasts meet up at DMC

Electric vehicle enthusiasts gathered at Del Mar College’s Center for Economic Development for the seventh annual Plug into the Wind Car Show.

The free event marked National Drive Electric Week, a nationwide event promoting the use of electric and hybrid vehicles and the spread of information on them. Various car owners gathered Oct. 1 to display their eco-friendly cars and talk to people about them, and with plenty of different cars, there was a lot to learn about.

The event this year was co-sponsored by Del Mar College’s Environmental Management Committee, which has organized the event for seven years, and the company Lime, one of the world’s largest shared electric vehicle companies and the one behind all the electric scooters around Corpus Christi.

The operational coordinator for the Corpus Christi area, Tess Montagna, brought out a few scooters for people to try and gave out free gifts. Lime has steadily been increasing its hotspots around the city to places like Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the surrounding area to make the electric scooters not just an activity for tourists.

“We get a lot of ridership down there as well, going from the university to the apartments where the students live,” Montagna said. “I’ve deployed a lot more throughout the city, because it was just on Shoreline and downtown, but we are here for the community not just the tourists.”

It was not just organizations that showed up but locals too. Adrian Clark, professor of political science at Del Mar, and Teresa Klein, a Del Mar professor of psychology and the committee member in charge of the event, brought her Ford C-Max Hybrid.

Klein has overseen the event for seven years now and has seen how the EV car scene has changed and is a big advocate for it.

“When we found out the C-Max when used was so cheap, we were in,” Klein said.

The event features several Teslas as well as everything from a Kia EV6 to a brand-new Hummer EV

“It has changed, the evolution has been, it has gone from all Teslas to a wider variety of cars,” Klein said.

Klein is also a member of the Sierra Club, one of the world’s oldest and most influential environmental organizations in the US with over 50 chapters across the states and more in other countries. Pamphlets were given out for the organization to those interested in their cause.
