Students invited to participate as well
Del Mar College’s Safe Space Club will march in Corpus Christi’s fifth annual Pride Month parade this Saturday.
The club is excited for the opportunity, according to the club President Ethan Sullivan.
“Having the presence of Del Mar College during the PRIDE Parade helps show solidarity with the large student population of Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas,” Sullivan said. “It shows that Del Mar is supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community and supports its student body that falls within the community.”
Jonathan Swindle, president of PRIDE Corpus Christi, the nonprofit organization responsible for putting on the annual parade, shared his excitement for it as well.
“We have 43 groups, totaling 468 participants, marching in the parade,” Swindle said.
“This event showcases the entire LGBTQIA+ community. Attendees can mingle with drag performers, musicians, service providers and fellow community members and their allies,” Swindle said.
According to Swindle, the event will also be free to encourage maximum capacity.
Students wishing to participate in the parade with the Safe Space Club can, even if aren’t currently a member.
“Go to Student Life and fill out a liability form there. Then just show up. We will accept you,” Sullivan said.
“We will be in a specific area so it would be a good idea to contact me or our adviser Erinn McComb before the parade so you can know exactly where to go, but staff there should be able to help students find our place in the parade,” Sullivan said.
As far as weather concerns, PRIDE Corpus Christi has already taken that under consideration as well.
“We’ve arranged for an entertainment tent with air conditioning. In case of inclement weather, we’ll adapt the event rather than reschedule, given the resources already committed,” Swindle said.
The parade will take place at 4 p.m. Oct. 7 on Shoreline Boulevard.
For students looking for community volunteer opportunities, PRIDE Corpus Christi is also an option.
“Those interested can connect with us through the volunteer page on our website. Our operations grow yearly, relying heavily on community support,” Swindle said.
