Cody Bahn/Managing Editor Del Mar College held a commemorative ceremony last week, remembering the tragic events of September 11, 2001. On September 8 and September 9, Del Mar staff and students gathered at each campuses peace pole for the ceremonies. Each ceremony was opened by the representation of the American flag by the Department of Public Safety and Education Color Guard. Rev Run comes to Bay Area Fellowship

Krystal Villarreal/Staff Reporter Rev Run (Joseph Simmons), formerly known as DJ Run from RUN DMC, will be in Corpus Christi on September 17 and 18 to speak at Bay Area Fellowship. Simmons will be addressing how he developed his relationship with the Lord through his personal experiences. “We decided to bring Rev Run to BAF because he is such a recognizable figure in every circle and even though he is a motivational Christian speaker, he will also draw in non-Christians as well which is great,” said Bryan Fiscus, Director of Television and Media at BAF.

Federal Judge pulls the plug on the sonogram bill

Staff Editorial Federal Judge Sam Sparks recently ruled that significant portions of Rick Perry’s emergency law requiring women seeking an abortion to undergo a sonogram are unconstitutional. This law would require doctors to describe in detail the size of the fetus and its organs and make available audio of any fetal heartbeat. Slated to take effect September 1. 2011,Judge Sparks stated that provisions of the bill violated the First Amendment by forcing doctors to engage in government-mandated speech. According to the exact wording of HB15 these are the requirements of the physician or sonographer who are performing these procedures.

The park includes various play areas, which consist of a lazy river, concession stands and wave pool. DMC Scholarships

Dina Ruiz / Staff Reporter The deadline for DMC Foundation Scholarship applications for Spring 2012 is Thursday. The Foundation is no longer accepting paper applications; students must complete applications via the new STARS Online application website. Corpus Christi Mermaids play hard

Devin Tyler/Staff Reporter DMC student Brittany Fowler can often be spotted on West Campus in a tank top on the way to her EMT class, but off campus she’s trading her tank top for football pads and a helmet. Fowler is attending Del Mar to earn her Paramedic Certification, just recently completed the Firefighter Academy and in May, Fowler joined the first Corpus Christi women’s full-contact football team, CC Mermaids. “I love sports, I’ve been involved with sports all my life,” Fowler said. This love of sports is one of her primary reasons for joining the football team”, she said.…

NAACP sponsors health fair at Del Mar College

Kelsey Heatley / Assistant Managing Editor The National Association Advancement of Colored People, and Del Mar College are holding a health fair clinic on September 17th from 10 a.m to 3 p.m at the Del Mar College West Campus. Terry Mills, president of the NAACP for the past three years, is excited for the city’s health fair. “This is the third health fair we’re holding and to help people get informed about their health is our goal,” Mills said.
