Grants return in spring

 Del Mar is now offering a new program alongside the HEERF III Emergency Student Aid.  The college is currently using institutional HEERF grant money, funds the government gave directly to Del Mar College to use for the college, including the add-a-free-class campaign, said Joseph Ruiz, director of Del Mar’s Financial Aid Services.  Del Mar wants to encourage and help students by taking advantage of the program, which offers students an additional class during alternative terms for free in the spring 2022 semester. 4 recognized as DMC Disability Advocates of the Year

 Four Del Mar faculty members were recognized for service to students at the eighth annual Disability Advocate of the Year Ceremony.  The four were honored in October, Disability Awareness Month, for their efforts and impact on students with disabilities.  The staff highlighted this year for assisting students’ needs are Elsa Brown, Ruby Estrada, Sarah Clark and Mark Hinojosa, the first IT specialist to receive the award.  The nominating process involves asking the student clientele who has been an advocate for you, said Brenda Garcia, student disability specialist.  After the nominees are listed the process for selecting the award recipients consists…

Netflix film takes look at local murder

‘The Phantom’ explores case of Carlos DeLuna, who was executed for crime Filmmaker Patrick Forbes examines a brutal 1983 murder in Corpus Christi in the documentary “The Phantom,” streaming now on Netflix.  Forbes focuses much of the film on Carlos DeLuna, one of many who have been recklessly accused and fell victim to wrongful convictions resulting to the death penalty.  DeLuna was captured by police hiding under a truck near the scene of Wanda Lopez’s murder. Incentives encourage vaccination

Del Mar offers gift cards worth $200 for students who get COVID-19 vaccine Del Mar has announced an incentive program aimed at getting students, faculty and staff vaccinated. The Viking Two-Step program is an effort to encourage students and employees at DMC to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by becoming fully vaccinated, said Michael Bratten, communication manager for Del Mars College Relations Office.
