Sun’s out; stay inside and watch movies

The final installment of the trilogy “How to Train Your Dragon” has Hiccup’s dragon, Toothless, finding out he isn’t the only Night Fury dragon. The villain,  a dragon hunter, puts a secret dragon utopia, “The Hidden World,” at risk. This film tackles friendship, fate, and ultimately letting go. A young woman, who found a purse on the subway, returns it to an older woman, Isabelle Huppert, and eventually befriends her. The young woman, Chloë Grace Moretz, soon realizes Huppert has an evil agenda waiting for her. “Greta” is a suspenseful film that is reminiscent to early-’90s psycho-thrillers. A French film…

Challenging, yet rewarding

Students used National Court Reporting and Captioning Week to let others know about the challenging yet rewarding career. Dolores Gonzalez, associate professor of court reporting, said the week, Feb. 9-16, is important because most students don’t think of court reporting as a major. “You’re basically creating a case log in litigation in court,” Gonzalez said. “The money is great and high. I’ve worked as a court reporter for 22 years and I never made less than $80,000 a year. The salary has increased over years. In the Valley and Laredo, you can get started off at $80,000 to $90,000 right…

I Couldn’t Help But Wonder…

Long-distance relationships are so passé One of my friends has never been in a relationship with someone who lives here in town. We will call him “Eric.” He has dated guys here, but he hates how small the local gay community is. The chance of you talking to someone here who hasn’t dated half of the guys here is slim to none. The first few guys he dated just wanted to hook up and not pursue a relationship, which is what Eric wanted. He met his first boyfriend, “Ben,” about six years ago, but via social media. Specifically, Twitter. Ben…

Ghosting at work becomes more common

Getting ghosted, when someone ends communication without notice, usually after a date, is common these days, but employers are also getting ghosted with workers just up and quitting. Most employees are not legally required to give two weeks’ notice when quitting, but it is a common practice. Whataburger manager Amanda Clarke has dealt with her fair share of employees ghosting her workplace. “It’s a common occurrence when it comes to those who are unhappy with their job,” Clarke said. “They find it more simple to just not show up anymore rather than go through with a two weeks’ notice.” Clarke…

The Life of a Queen

Joshua has a large bag full of makeup. He starts by putting moisturizer on his face and gluing down his eyebrows before he applies foundation to make his skin tone slightly lighter. The idea of becoming someone else is one of the main factors of being a drag queen. Joshua loves putting on his makeup. He feels like he is painting a masterpiece and he is the art. It feels as if he is escaping into a fantasy and can set free the hidden being trapped inside. Joshua is not just putting on makeup; he’s changing into someone else. Thinking…

Escape room proves difficult for editors

Trying to disarm a nuclear bomb early in the morning is a great way to wake up your brain. Foghorn editors John Oliva, Jose Alonzo, Gabriella Ybarra and Sam Gutierrez started off walking up the long ramp in the freezing cold to start our adventure at Corpus Christi’s newest escape room. The Lexington Museum on the Bay employee had us fill out policy and waiver forms before we watched a safety video about what to expect. From there he led us down a hallway, with very short staircases, to the escape room. A video played where a Russian character warned…

In with the new regents

The Del Mar College Board of Regents is starting the new year with a new look.  Elva Estrada was sworn in as a re-elected Del Mar College Regent for District 3 on Jan. 7.  Estrada was out of town in December when other members were sworn in, allowing the Board of Regents to make a special arrangement for her.  “First of all, I’d like to thank my God for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve Del Mar College for six more years,” Estrada said. “Of course the voters of District 3 and my strong supporter, my husband.”  Hector “Coach” Salinas was also sworn in…
