IceRays fall to Warriors

Next home series is Oct. 27-28 at American Bank Center The Corpus Christi IceRays came back to the American Bank Center for another weekend bout. This time, the team played the Oklahoma City Warriors on Oct. 6-7. All seemed well the first night after IceRays forward Ryan Hintz scored in the first period, but that wouldn’t come to last. In two minutes, three Warriors forwards scored one goal apiece in the second period alone, bringing the score to 3-1 going into the third. And by the end, it wasn’t much better. Two more Warriors put the puck in the net,…

Rhinos and IceRays go head to head

Corpus Christi’s hockey team, the IceRays, opened their season with two home games against the El Paso Rhinos. The teams met at the American Bank Center for the season-starting bout on Sept. 23 and 24. The first game started out shaky, with Rhinos forward Tory Lund scoring a goal by the end of the first period. Luckily, IceRays forwards Pierson Sobush and Mathieu Bourgault responded in kind with a goal apiece in the second period before the Rhinos tied it back up. The third period was quiet until two poorly timed penalties forced the Rays to field only three players…

Tuesday nights are for tennis

The intramurals program is hosting tennis learning and playing sessions every Tuesday night for the remainder of the semester. No experience is needed to join these sessions; students are encouraged to simply come on in. These lessons are held by student assistant Yetta Williams, who has many years of experience with the sport. “I’ve had seven-plus years of playing competitively,” Williams said. “I have run and assisted tennis camps. I have also been hired as a tennis camp counselor. Comparing these lessons to her past camps, Williams noted slight changes. “It’s a little bit different,” Williams said. “It’s just getting…

All of these events are open for everybody to join. These aren’t all of the events the program has planned, though. Many more events are slated to begin as the semester unfolds. Below are just some of the events scheduled for the remainder of the fall semester. ZUMBA FITNESS…

Students can squeeze in some water aerobics every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch time, thanks the intramurals program’s new classes. “Lunch Time Water Fitness is a 45-minute water aerobics class from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.,” intramurals director Carla Gamez-Vela said. The exercises are low-intensity, and participants will not be expected to swim or delve…

Intramurals rolls into new semester

Several attend kickoff party at roller rink The Intramurals program celebrated the start of their fall operations with a party on Sept. 21 at the SK8LAND roller rink in Annaville. “We wanted to gather everyone and pass out information on our future events,” intramurals director Carla Gamez-Vela said. “Just let everyone know who we are.” And gather everyone they did, as people from multiple Del Mar locations attended the party. “I’m at a different campus now,” nursing major Diana Nguyen said. “So, I get to see familiar faces and new faces at the same time.” In fact, students from the…

Rush Week offers chance to connect with other students

The Harvin Center’s main lobby will be hosting Club Rush Week from Sept. 18-22. “Club Rush Week is the week that we recruit students to join the different clubs we have here on campus,” said Grace Carreon with Student Leadership and Campus Life. “Whatever club that interests them, they can just speak to the members and see what their needs are.” Clubs are not the only groups that students are open to joining, however. “We also have the Student Government Association that they can join,” Carreon said. Not only will students be open to joining clubs and/or the SGA, but…

Art Walk turns its focus to live music

Visitors to September’s Art Walk noticed a big change in how the monthly festival looked — and sounded. Traditionally dubbed Art Walk, September’s installation, called Music Walk, saw an emphasis on live music. The change went over well with some patrons. “Despite the weather, it was really enjoyable,” attendee Mia Galvan said. “Especially because this month was more music-based so there was live music everywhere.” Fellow attendee David Leonard agreed. “There was more music,” Leonard said. “And that’s good.” However, it seems that the local businesses took a backseat to give the music center stage. “There wasn’t really much this…
