Intramurals rolls into new semester

Several attend kickoff party at roller rink

The Intramurals program celebrated the start of their fall operations with a party on Sept. 21 at the SK8LAND roller rink in Annaville.

“We wanted to gather everyone and pass out information on our future events,” intramurals director Carla Gamez-Vela said. “Just let everyone know who we are.”

And gather everyone they did, as people from multiple Del Mar locations attended the party.

“I’m at a different campus now,” nursing major Diana Nguyen said. “So, I get to see familiar faces and new faces at the same time.”

In fact, students from the high school at Heritage Campus attended as well.

“I’ve been enjoying myself,” Collegiate student Sofia Riyis said.

And other attendees, such as music education major Gregory Gomez, had never skated before attending.

“This was my first time skating,” Gomez said. “I was scared to do so.”

Roller skating was the highlight of the night, but there were more activities.

“We did limbo and we had Simon Says,” Vela said. “We had some fun games while skating and door prizes and awards.”

A similar party was held during the spring semester, and Vela compared the attendance to the previous one.

“I think it was pretty similar,” Vela said. “Almost everyone who RSVP’d showed up, plus a few extra ones who walked in. And that’s what we wanted.”

Nguyen, who also attended the spring party, said both had a good turnout.

“I feel like last time had a lot more people,” Nguyen said. “But a good number of people came this time too.”

Many attendees, including campus lifeguard Ryan Lennan, enjoyed their time at the party.

“It’s been going pretty good,” Lennan said.

He was still happy with the kickoff party after attending the previous one.

“I went to the event earlier this year in the spring semester,” Lennan said. “I’m glad to be back.”

Despite participating in intramurals previously, his spirits were raised by the skating party.

“I feel real excited for it,” Lennan said.

The party’s plan seems to have succeeded, as some students were more interested in intramurals after attending the party.

“I do plan on joining,” Nguyen said.
