Poetry Festival takes on a new name

The People’s Poetry Festival will now become the People’s Literary Festival in its 9th year as the newly appointed chair, Assistant Professor of English, Sarah Lenz revealed. The three day long interactive festival will begin on February 22 at Del Mar College’s Reading Lab on Heritage campus. Free tax assistance program at Del Mar College

Tax season is underway, and anyone whose income was lower than $60k last year can access free assistance filing their tax return by IRS-certified volunteers from now until April 15th. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program has 4 locations throughout Corpus Christi and one of them is in at the Del Mar College Heritage Campus. Adelfino Palacios, a Professor of Accounting who has been employed by Del Mar since 1981, brought the VITA program here after seeing it on other college campuses. Collegiate Hero Program kicks off in Harvin Center

Del Mar College faculty recently joined Coastal Bend Blood Center staff and representatives to launch a new program that lets DMC students help save lives while receiving a medal of merit.  Sofia Jimenez, DMC SGA president, welcomed students back for the spring semester and for the launch of the Collegiate Hero Program on Jan. 24 in the Harvin Center. “Being active in your college allows you to build connections to students, staff, faculty, administration and others in your community.” Jimenez said, “You learn leadership.”  She told students what a difference they can make by being active with both the school…

Improv troupe hosted performance in Finley Theater

Laughter rang out throughout the theater as they watched Del Mar students perform improv to their show, “Whadja Call Me??”  The performance was hosted by Del Mar alumnus Nathan “Nate” Ray Clark, who worked with the students for a week in developing their improv skills. Handshake provides students with career help

Hire-Viking is out, and Handshake is in. As the spring semester starts, along with it comes a new career exploration platform ready to use for the students and alumni of Del Mar College. Hire-Viking was the previous platform that enabled the student body to search for employment, both while they were currently enrolled at Del Mar and post-graduation. DMC art department to host 58th annual drawing and sculpture event

DMC’s Art Department is coming up on its 58th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture, an event Joe Cain, art professor at Del Mar, created back in 1966. The entries were not limited to Del Mar college students. Submissions were open to all U.S. artists, with a record 792 artworks submitted for consideration, including 25 sculptures and 28 two-dimensional works. Accepted submissions included work that has been created within the past three years. Artists were allowed to submit a maximum of three pieces. Graduation application deadline is quickly approaching

The application deadline is Feb. 21 for the graduation ceremony for spring 2024, which is scheduled for May 17. Del Mar College students expecting to graduate this spring must fill out a graduation application packet that’s available via https://delmar.edu/current-students/graduation-information.html, where requirements for graduation are also listed. Students can also visit the Registrar’s Office to receive more information. It is the student’s responsibility to both speak with the program adviser to see if they’re eligible for graduation and by filling out the application packet.  The packet should include your academic evaluation with a signature from your adviser.  Participation in commencement and…

Latest news on construction for Heritage Campus library

A new year brings new updates on DMC construction, and possibly new project announcements as well. As far as the highly anticipated new White Library on Heritage Campus, Cody Gregg, dean of learning resources, said he hopes the renovated building will open this summer. “We would like to be able to open the library up by June/July, bet there are a few things that are going on with construction that may delay this,” Gregg said.
