Fire science cadets show off skills at fire demo
As the semester comes to an end, the Del Mar College Fire Science students held a family day to show their families and communities the techniques they have learned. Program Director Michael Schmitt, Instructor Joe McQuary, and Assistant Instructor James Creek oversaw four groups of five students put blazing fires out of a rusted dumpster and an old vehicle. As flames escaped the top of a large dumpster, the fire science students directed the hose and worked as a team, demonstrating the training they’ve learned during program. Paws and Relax held on DMC campuses
Paws and Relax held their annual event at DMC Del Mar College students, faculty, and staff stopped by to “Paws and Relax” at a free pet therapy event at the Windward Campus on Nov. 19. Attendees had the opportunity to relax and reduce stress with the help of therapy dogs. The event featured therapy dogs from The GO TEAM and offered participants the chance to sit with the dogs, receive anxiety screenings, and engage in various stress relief activities. New authentication rolled our for DMC staff and students
Del Mar College students are currently getting enrolled in Multifactor Authentication, or MFA, for all college IT systems off campus. MFA is a Multifactor Authentication initiative aimed at helping secure DMC students, faculty and staff data, and college systems. This was implemented by the college’s internal auditors, and an independent external ID and cybersecurity audit firm. The initiative was planned in multiple phases, beginning with faculty and staff, followed by students, and is an extra layer of protection for students, faculty and staff user accounts preventing compromised users from their information being leaked. Foghorn staff attended the National College Media Association/Associated Collegiate Press Convention in New Orleans. The event took place Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and provided the opportunity for students to collaborate with other newspapers across the country, sharing experience and expertise. The convention offered a wealth of speaker sessions, covering topics that challenged attendees to think creatively, act ethically, and work both logically and legally in the field of journalism. Kim Frederick, drama professor at Del Mar College, is wrapping up his final semester after 37 years of service. Continuing Education program brings “Beyond the Frame” Exhibit
Del Mar College’s Continuing Education program brings their “Beyond the Frame: A Exhibition of Digital Photography” to the public. Twenty students from the DMC Continuing Education’s Digital Photography program will have their digital photographs displayed for the exhibition. “I think these courses are important for our community as this is enrichment for all ages,” part-time photography instructor Edgar de la Garza said. “I’ve had students who are from 22 to all the way to 70 respectfully. Veterans Day bell ceremony
Del Mar College hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11, to honor and recognize the service of student, staff, and faculty veterans. The ceremony led by Christopher Arcega, veterans affairs specialist with Del Mar, included the Two Bell Ceremony, a Navy tradition that honors fallen shipmates. Following the ceremony, attendees gathered in the Harvin Center Veterans Lounge (for refreshments and a Marine Corps birthday cake-cutting ceremony. “The Siren” returning after a hiatus, submissions are being accepted now
Del Mar College’s student-led literary magazine “The Siren” is returning. After a four-year break, “The Siren” is now looking for artists and writers that wish to be featured in the upcoming issue. “We are excited to bring back ‘The Siren,’” said Allison Ehrlich, publications assistant for the Foghorn journalism lab. “It’s been on hiatus since the 2020 issue was released and the students have been eager to bring back the tradition.” Students and staff can submit photography, photo essays, drawings, paintings, digital art, short stories, poetry, and personal essays.
