The American Cancer Society (ACS) is hosting a fundraiser, “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”, on Saturday October 22, 2011 at the Corpus Christi Water Gardens.
Making Strides is a 5K walk/run, and all funds raised will help support local Breast Cancer research and services. It is not a race, but a celebration of survivorship, according to the ACS website.
The walk begins at 9 A.M., with registration for individuals and teams starting at 7 A.M. There will also be a Zumba instruction before the event to help the walkers get warmed-up.
You can also register online at www.makingstridescorpuschristi.org, as well as find other fundraising and volunteer opportunities in the area.
This is the third year the ACS has done the Making Strides walk, which has generated many more walkers than expected, according to Kayla Hanson, ACS Event Manager for Making Strides.
“The first year we only expected 1,500 walkers to register, and ended up having over 4,000” Hanson said.
Every member of Del Mar’s music sorority, Phi Sigma, will participate in the ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, according to David Irving, Advisor to the Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma.
“One of the things that we are supposed to do as Phi Sigmas is become involved in women’s issues. Breast cancer is certainly a major issue for women” Irving said. “Almost everybody has been touched by breast cancer in some way.”
“Anybody that wants to come walk with us can certainly do that” Irving said. “ Each one of us is also trying to get 50 dollars in donations as well.”
Anyone who would like to donate on behalf of the sorority can contact David Irving by e-mail at dirving@delmar.edu or by phone at 698-1616.
“I encourage everyone to get involved, either by walking with us or making donations” Irving said. “A sorority is all about doing things together, and helping fight Breast Cancer is definitely something to be done together.”
Hanson also encourages the public to attend. “If you have never been to one I highly recommend it” Hanson said. “I could try to explain the feelings you get from it but I wouldn’t do it justice. To see that many people take off from the start line at the same time, it’s just this amazing sea of pink.”
The water flowing from the Water Gardens will also be pink in support of the cause.
