This past September, Del Mar College officially revealed their new Spirit Symbol logo. The logo was unveiled and mounted next to the College seal in the North Lobby area of the Harvin Student Center. This Fall semester the Del Mar College Alumni Association is sponsoring a new event called “The Viking Games” to help continue the celebration for the new official Spirit Symbol logo.

The Viking Activities will consist of multiple challenges from physical fitness, Flag Football Bowl and a Viking Carnival. All these events will extend throughout the month of October with much more still being organized for the month of November.

The first week of the Viking Challenge (Oct. 8-12) will be the Viking Braun Competition.  Today in the gymnasium on the East Campus the Ultimate Viking Challenge will begin from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm. The West Campus competition will be held Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Wall of Values inside the Public Safety Education Classroom Building at the same time (8:30am – 12:30pm).

The competition is for male and female students and consists of many physically challenging activities. Activities for the competition will be crunches, one-half mile run, fixed arm hang and pull-ups. The fixed arm hang will be for the women and the pull-ups will be for the men. During the competition there will be volunteers on duty to record scores and the winners will be notified via email or telephone. Students who are interested have to stop by within the time given for the event to register and compete.

During the week of the Viking Braun Competition, the Coastal Bend Blood Center will be on site on West and East Campuses for all DMC students and staff who are interested in making life-saving donations.

In week two of the Viking Games, the Viking Bowl Flag Football game will be held. The Viking Bowl Flag Football game will be played between the East and West Campus faculty and staff to compete for bragging rights and most importantly, the trophy. The game will begin on the East Campus at the Grassy knoll area between the Heldenfels Administration Building and the Fine Arts Center, at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 19.

Before the flag football game there will be plenty of free tailgate food such as hotdogs and drinks.

During halftime, students and DMC employees are encouraged to show their Viking spirit by competing in any of four events: Tug-of-War Challenge, Crazy Bats, the Male and Female Viking Costume Contest and the Collegiate High School Drill Team.  In order to take part in any of the half time activities students must register before kick off.

Week three of the Viking Games will include the Halloween-themed Viking Carnival, from 5-10 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Harvin Center on East Campus. There will be games, prizes for best costumes, food and more.  Viking trophies will be given out to competition winners who participate in the Viking Games. DMC Student Leadership, Campus Life Office and DMC Registered Student Organizations also will be helping raise funds for their organizations and the carnival event.

The DMC Alumni Association and other associations involved in the events are currently planning more activities on for November. For more information about any of the events occurring this October, visit Del Mar College’s website, www.delmar.edu, and click the 2012 Viking Games link to the right.
