Cosmetology students took part in a special effects makeup workshop where they turned themselves into zombies.

The students attended a demo with award-winning special effects makeup artist Denise Garza, a Del Mar alumna.

Garza’s work has been featured in Deadly Desert magazine, Blood magazine and Artistry magazine. She won the Makeup Artist of the Year award in 2012 for Raw: Natural Born Artist in San Antonio. She was also the lead makeup artist for the local Fright Night Haunted House.

“It feels great to come back each time and show the student techniques for future application,” Garza said.

Garza said she feels honored to be able to come back and help students in any way she can.

During the demo on Oct. 29, Garza held a workshop for the students to learn new skills and techniques.

On Halloween, the students put their skills to test.

Rhianon Mendez, a drama major, said she always been interested in special effects makeup.

“The workshop taught me things I wouldn’t know if I were to do it by myself,” Mendez said.

Garza critiques the students’ zombie looks during the makeup workshop held for the public on Halloween in Bartlett Theatre.
