Annual fundraiser moves online

Stringers for Scholarships meets its goal, but more donations encouraged

Every year, Stringers for Scholarships gives the community a chance to help make a positive change in a student’s academic life by raising funds for scholarships.

With strict social distancing measures in place across the Coastal Bend because of COVID-19, the DMC Foundation this semester is instead hosting its annual fishing tournament as an online virtual fundraiser. This year’s theme is “Stringers for Scholarships 2020: The One That Got Away.”

The foundation hopes to raise $45,000 this year, according to its webpage. While the goal has been met, the group still encourages people to get involved to help even more students in need. Normally the fundraiser is held at Mile Marker 27, with live music, food and drinks, all while contestants attempt to win cash prizes and awards. Now, individuals who would have paid for team entry fees, side pots or raffle tickets are asked to donate those funds directly online.

All proceeds will go toward the scholarship program, which enables students to meet their educational needs during this crucial time.

“Despite not having our annual fishing tournament, we are receiving so many generous donations from past participants,” said Cynthia Arbuckle, DMC development coordinator. “It’s heartwarming to see individuals and businesses in the community support students who are pursuing their educational dreams.”

Students who are granted a scholarship can use the funds toward academic supplies such as textbooks, lab fees, uniforms or just to make ends meet.

Several sponsors, such as LVN Inc., an engineering company, have been in participation with the DMC Foundation since the start. Additional sponsors including AEP Texas and Kleberg Bank have also contributed. To become a sponsor, contact Arbuckle at 361-698-1031 or carbuckle@delmar.edu.
