Speech and Debate team seeking new members

The Vocal Vikings, Del Mar College’s speech and debate team, is seeking new members ahead of its season opener at the Bayou Bucket swing tournament Oct. 23, which will be held virtually.

Students will have the opportunity to compete in speaking and storytelling events against other

Texas schools such as The University of Texas and Texas State.

Competitive events include Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Dramatic Duo, Extemporaneous Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Program Oral Interpretation, After Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis, Drama Interpretation and Poetry Interpretation.

To join, students must complete an informational packet, maintain a GPA of 2.5, attend weekly meetings that are set to accommodate squad members’ schedules, attend practice sessions regularly and have competitive material prepared a week before the competition.

Vocal Vikings allows students to gain confidence within themselves and gain a sense of community along the way.

“‘The ‘new’ is always scary, but you should never be afraid of success or of self-improvement, which is what I found on the team all those years ago and after the fact,” said Miguel Porfirio, a volunteer and assistant coach for the team.

The team is led by Sarah Contreras, professor of speech communication and director of forensics.

For more information on how to join the Vocal Vikings team, contact Contreras at 361-698-1566 or slcontrer@delmar.edu, or stop by Suite D206 in the General Academic and Music Building on Heritage Campus.
