Del Mar will host a series of presentations on Oct. 20 to mark Free Speech Week, including a panel discussion with several distinguished speakers.
The event will feature keynote speaker Augustin Rivera Jr., Del Mar College’s general counsel; Tom Whitehurst, a former Caller-Times editor with almost 40 years of local journalism experience; Ana Tamez, digital director for KIII 3 News; Robert Muilenburg, professor of journalism; Jim Klein, professor of history; and others.
Rivera will kick off the event with a talk on campus speech at 11 a.m. in the Retama Room on the second floor of the Harvin Center on Heritage Campus. A roundtable discussion on “Freedom of the Press: A Cornerstone of Democracy” will follow at 11 a.m., with a panel discussion on protecting faculty speech at 12:45 p.m.
Annually held during the third week of October since 2005, Free Speech Week strives to increase public awareness of the significance of freedom of speech and the press in American democracy and to celebrate this freedom.
Free Speech Day is presented by the Departments of Social Sciences as well as Communications, Languages and Reading. Admission is free.
