Flag football and basketball leagues set to begin at Del Mar

Del Mar Intramurals is hosting a 6v6 Flag Football League on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the football field beside the Gym on the Heritage Campus. The initial start date was set to be Nov. 1, but because of rain, the kickoff date has been postponed. The league will have a gathering on Nov. 8 to assess teams, rules and the schedule, while the first games will now kick off on Nov. 10.

Games will be played from 5:20-7 p.m. and the league will have a double-round robin format, meaning each team will play all their opponents twice.

Each game will consist of two 18-minute halves, with a five-minute halftime in between. There are no gender limits for this league; it is co-ed so everyone is welcome to join.

According to Roy Moya, interim Intramural director, teams will primarily have four people on the line along with one receiver and a quarterback. He also said there is room for more teams up until the stating date on Nov. 10.

“As of now I have two teams, but I need four teams to make a proper double-round robin schedule,” Moya said.
Every team will play one game each Tuesday and Thursday. Games will begin with a kickoff from the 15-yard line. Winners will receive a custom Intramurals champion hoodie and T-shirt.

Intramurals also will host a 1v1 basketball knockout tournament starting Nov. 8. Games will be played from 5-6:30p.m. in the Gym on the Heritage Campus.

Moya said this will be one of the only single-elimination tournaments for intramurals.

“Once they are knocked out on that day, that’ll be end for them,” he said.

Competitors will be randomly matched up against each other in a 1v1 battle to 11.

Moya said the tournament should run one week, depending on how many people participate.

“We will run four games at a time. Depending on the number of competitors it should run across one Tuesday and Thursday,” he said.

Players can register for either event as an individual or as a team from 1-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday or 1-6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in Room 108 of the Gym, or by emailing your full name, DMC or staff number, phone number and email address to rmoya@delmar.edu.
