While many in the Coastal Bend have found themselves homeless, it’s not impossible to begin again. Assistance is available as storm victims begin to reconstruct buildings, houses, businesses and their lives. Several volunteer and government groups have offered help, but knowing what is available or how to apply for assistance can be difficult. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, works in conjunction with other U.S. government agencies to provide response to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters. Bill Eaves beaves@foghornnews.com Texas Mutual Insurance Co. has donated a $100,000 grant to Del Mar College’s driver safety program. Woody Hill, vice president of safety services for Texas Mutual, presented the check to Del Mar representatives Lenora Keas and Mary McQueen Jan. 25 on West Campus. “It’s our mission to promote safety in the workplace,” Hill said. “We want everyone to go home in the same condition they arrive to work in.” He expressed Texas Mutual’s desire to promote safety education in the community, which the insurer supports by donating to six campuses annually. Del Mar College revealed three new outfits for its beloved mascot, Valdar the Viking, at a fashion show-styled event Nov. 3. Valdar, previously known as “the Viking,” was first unveiled in April 2017 after about a year of development, which saw the college work with David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic and owner of Raymond Entertainment. Starting in September 2017 and concluding in November of the same year, a contest was held to decide a new name for the Viking, replacing one that, according to Del Mar lore “has 15 letters, all consonants, and is impossible to pronounce in English…
