DMC Vocal Vikings bring home bronze from nationals

Members of the Vocal Vikings, the Del Mar College speech team, brought home two Bronze Sweepstakes honors at the Phi Rho Pi National Speech Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

The Vocal Vikings won Bronze Sweepstakes in Debate and Bronze Sweepstakes for Overall Competition in the small school division during the event held March 31 through April 6. The Overall Competition ranking is based on all rankings from all of the preliminary rounds combined with individual events plus debate. The Vocal Vikings team members are Hunter Frost, Rebecca Farias, Jasmine Vasquez, and Chloe Castillo, led by coaches Sarah Contreras and Marjorie Sparrow.

In addition to the students’ wins, Assistant Director of Forensics Marjorie Sparrow was recognized  as Coach of the Year by all of the students in her division, made up of Texas and Florida. Fifty schools attended the tournament, with more than 200 students competing.

Phi Rho Pi is a national nonprofit dedicated to dedicated to increasing knowledge of the forensic arts for community college and junior college students. The national tournament is offers 11 individual events, three forms of debate and interpreters’ theatre.
