The Coastal Bend Blood Center recognized Del Mar College’s East Campus on Wednesday by presenting the college with the 2014 Top Performer Award in the education category. The center collected 603 units of blood during its 21 drives on East Campus in 2014. This is the second consecutive year East Campus has been named top donor of the year.
Texas A&M University-Kingsville came in second with 350 units of blood collected, while Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi was third with 326 units. Del Mar College’s West Campus came in fourth, with 283 donations.
The Coastal Bend Blood Center’s mobile donation center visits Del Mar College, both East and West campuses, once a month during the fall and spring semesters and stays two to three days each time.

East Campus construction set to finish in spring 2019 Despite Hurricane Harvey, snow and heavy rains, completion of the General Academic/Music Phase 2 construction project is still set to open in August 2019 on East Campus, according to August Alfonso, chief IT officer and vice president of Facilities Operations. The $46 million project that started in summer 2017, funded by the general obligation bond from the voters in 2014, will include additional general academic classrooms and a second music building. Award-winning, Texas-born author Diane Gonzales Bertrand used her experiences as a writer to tell Del Mar College students how they can enjoy their own lives at a recent event on East Campus. The Cultural Programs Committee at DMC introduced Bertrand, who shared her story on Nov. 16 in the Venters Building. Bertrand grew up in a multi-cultural neighborhood and her days were immersed in her Mexican-American heritage, which she transposed into notebooks until she filled over 70 with her life story. Resource center to give away prizes during its grand opening celebration Starting this fall semester, Del Mar students will notice a new name for the reading, math, and writing resource centers. Tutor Hall is celebrating its grand opening at noon Sept. 14.
