You are what your ancestors ate and experienced, study says

We’ve all heard “you are what you eat.” But is it possible to still be what your grandparents ate? This theory was explored at the genes vs. destiny seminar given at Del Mar College on April 22 by Del Mar College Associate Professor Zaldy F. Doyungan, Ph.D. Doyungan explained the concept of epigenetics, which is the study of the regulation of gene expression. This concept explains how who we are is at least partially determined by the choices our relatives made. For example, Doyungan explained that if your grandmother or grandfather experienced starvation in their life, then you could still possibly…

Fourth season of ‘House of Cards’ knocks it out of the park

“House of Cards” has become one of the most binge-worthy shows available on Net ix, and Season 4 did not disappoint. “House of Cards” is a political drama about a politician named Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, who forces his way to power and makes many enemies along the way. Even though this is a political drama this show does not bore you with politics; the writers do a very good job of keeping the show exciting. Netflix ‘House of Cards’ is not like conventional politics. It is cynical, dark, and makes for great television. Season 3 ended on somewhat…

Students dig deep for intramurals

There is an ongoing intramural volleyball league at Del Mar College. The games take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Kinesiology building in the gym. The games are at 3 and 4 o’clock in the afternoon, with each game being decided by who wins two sets out of three. The first two sets are played to 25, and if the teams split the first two sets they play a winner-take-all third set that goes up to 15. The league will be ending on the Tuesday after Spring Break, March 22. Gabriel Myers/Foghorn Aaron Combs and Irene Trevino play spikeball…

DMC early voting reaches new high

More than 700 people cast early ballots this year at Del Mar College’s Heldenfels Administration Building, a steep increase from previous primary elections. Some 718 people voted early at DMC this year, while another 122 came out on Election Day, according to the Nueces County clerk’s website. In the previous two primaries when there was a presidential nomination up for grabs, Del Mar did not have nearly as many people voting. In 2012, 37 people voted at Del Mar, but much of that was probably due to the fact that the primary voting in Texas did not take place until May…

Local elections are where the people matter

March 1 kicks off the election season with primary voting. The general elections follow this November, and the presidential candidates are taking all the attention. This is choosing the most powerful leader in the free world, so understandably there is a certain level of excitement for this. The national elections are not where our vote has the biggest impact— that comes from the local elections. Our local elections are where our vote has the most impact, and it’s where we elect the people who decide what is best for us on a day-to-day basis. Foghorn file A student registers to vote in October 2015…

East bests West in Viking Bowl

East Campus came out victorious at this year’s Viking Bowl, a flag football game between the staff at Del Mar College’s East and West campuses. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen your “well-respected” professors get in each other’s face over rule changes during a flag football game, and that happened often at the Nov. 20 game, played on West Campus. There were festivities leading up to the game such as the punt, pass and kick competition, and the two campuses faced off in a game of tug of war at halftime. The game started out with no scoring from either…

Biography on Michael Jordan an intriguing read

“Michael Jordan The Life” may be one of the most interesting and in-depth biographies ever written. Author Roland Lazenby goes to great lengths to be as detailed and thorough as possible. This isn’t just a book about Michael Jordan’s stats or accomplishments, because you don’t even have to know basketball to know that Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest to ever play the game of basketball. This book takes a look at the making of Jordan and offers readers a look into why Jordan is who he is. You get a look into the psyche of Jordan, the intense…

DMC intramural flag football kick off

C. Robert Gonzalez/Foghorn Clay on the Free Agents dives to catch the football. The tournament will be continuing through Dec. 2. This will be the last intramural event until next semester. While Del Mar College employees showed off their flag football skills at the Viking Bowl on Nov. 20, DMC students also have been tak- ing part in a flag football tournament of their own. The intramural flag football league has been going on here at Del Mar, and it seems to have been the most competitive of the intramural sports this semester. The league began on Nov. 16 and will…

‘Trojan War’ a deep look at USC football team

“Trojan War” is an ESPN 30 for 30 about the Pete Carroll-led USC Trojans football team from 2000-06. The documentary, directed by Aaron Rashaan Thomas, begins by explaining the history of USC football and the success they had enjoyed from 1960s into the 1980s before falling from national prominence. Thomas then goes into the struggles that USC faced in the 1990s and how the hiring of Pete Carroll in 2000 was faced with much criticism from the media because he was a failed NFL coach who had never coached college. The documentary then begins to focus on three players, Matt…

Flour Bluff football season a lackluster one

Friday night lights came to an end Nov. 6. No, I don’t mean the movie or TV series. I’m talking about the Friday night lights that took place every Friday at Flour Bluff High School this football season. The Flour Bluff Hornets needed to win, and they needed a loss by either the Victoria East Titans or the Gregory Portland Wildcats. Flour Bluff beat the Alice Coyotes 27-21, but they didn’t get the loss they needed so their season end- ed in disappointment. Gabriel Myers/Foghorn The Flour Bluff Hornets rush onto the field to kick off their game against the…
