‘Advanced Warfare’ changes it up

‘Call of Duty’ adds many new features  Jonathan Garcia / Reporter The “Call of Duty” series is one of the most successful franchises in the first-person shooter genre. A new installment called “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” was recently released on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC, developed by Sledgehammer Games (PS4, XB1, PC) and High Moon Studios (PS3, 360). Gamers gathered Nov. 1 at Gamestop on Saratoga Boulevard in the Kohl’s shopping center to get their hands on the “Day Zero Edition,” which gave gamers access to the game ahead of its scheduled release date. “Advanced…

My blue heart is now bleeding red

Lexy Garcia / Reporter Election Day was tough. Nationally, the climate for Republicans to gain control of the Senate was ideal, and in step with history. And locally, not one Democrat won office in Nueces County. In what is supposed to be one of the most liberal counties in Texas, only after Travis County (Austin), Democratic voters didn’t show up. Initially, the sting was harsh and discouraging; my past six months on the Wendy Davis campaign felt for naught and I felt very small. Davis’ defeat was personal. Partially because she fought for such personal rights, but also because within Davis’…

Don’t bash social media activism

Midori Allen / Reporter Our generation has always been known to be addicted to technology. Most of us have our social media readily available on our phone, computer, tablets, televisions and even refrigerators now. I can admit I have an account for most common social medias that are available (you know, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), and I know that when breaking news happens social media is the first place I turn to get information. With these giant networking platforms we have an easy way to try to make a difference. But trying to make a difference and being active is sadly…

Fastest man alive reappears on the silver screen

‘Glee’ vet Gustin shines despite early skepticism Jonathan Garcia / Reporter Grant Gustin speeds his way as DC Comics’ scarlet speedster “The Flash” as it makes its television debut on The CW. Also starring is Danielle Panabaker, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Rick Costnett, Jesse L. Martin, and Tom Cavanagh. When the show was first announced people were skeptical about Gustin bringing the fastest man alive on screen because of his role on “Glee.” The show premiered on Oct. 7 and had the highest ratings for The CW since “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009. Only few episodes into the first season and…

‘The Murasame Castle’ arrives on eShop

Famicom classic re-released for Western gamers Victor Rhodes / Reporter Nintendo has finally brought the Japan-only Famicom Desk System game, “The Mysterious Murasame Castle,” to Western shores. The game was digitally released through Nintendo 3DS eShop service last summer. Originally released in 1986, “The Mysterious Murasame Castle” takes place in the Edo Japan era, where a blue-haired samurai named Takamaru must eradicate an alien creature from Murasame Castle and defeat four castle lords. “Murasame Castle” is a top-down view game running on the original “Legend of Zelda” engine. It focuses more on combat rather than solving puzzles and exploration. Different enemies…

It’s time to set aside our differences

Kaliegh Benck / Editor in chief I’ve always felt that everyone should stand for something. I think that individuals should fully believe and defend what they feel is truth to them. I can’t say I grew up in the church but from ages 11-19 I adopted the lifestyle of a devoted Christian. My family attended a nondenominational church every Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday evening. Monday evenings were reserved for an hourlong session of prayer that was occupied by a handful of faithfuls. During Easter and Christmas seasons various evenings were blacked out for a play or choir practice.…

Foodie fighters: battle of best BBQ

Restaurant reviewers stumble across saucey spot This week’s Economic Crunch was a wee bit farther down the road. Walking to Julian’s BBQ from the Harvin Center was hot, but not too unpleasant as the weather had turned nice and the company was enjoyable. The walk took about 15 minutes — just beware crossing at the intersection of Baldwin. Julian’s BBQ, located at 1818 Baldwin, claims to be world famous BBQ so we accepted the challenge.   SWEETS MCQUEEN Once we arrived at Julian’s the air conditioning was a nice welcome. The restaurant seemed clean at first glance, clean tables, no…

‘Alien: Isolation’ arrives in time for Halloween

Steven Martinez / Reporter A popular way to get in the spooky spirit of Halloween is to watch scary movies. But an even better way to feel the thrills and chills of horror is to experience them first hand in two of this month’s video game releases.   ‘ALIEN: ISOLATION’ The “Alien” movie franchise has had a lasting impact on both science fiction and horror since Ridley Scott’s original film and James Cameron’s action packed sequel. The games based on the popular franchise have not had such a storied history, with last year’s “Aliens: Colonial Marines” being one of the worst…

It’s time for thrills, chills

Victor Rhodes / Reporter With Halloween approaching and the cooler weather on its way, many people may be looking to curl up on the couch with a scary movie. To get you started, here are my top five horror movies of all time.   ‘BEETLEJUICE’ Tim Burton’s trademarked “dark humor” style begins here in his second film as director. The film stars Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, who was hired by two ghosts (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) to scare away a family. A series of antics soon follows, one involving Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz), Jeffrey Jones (Charles Deetz) and their guests…

If you haven’t seen ‘Gone Girl,’ get going

Affleck gives what may be his best performance yet Jonathan Garcia / Reporter “Gone Girl,” the latest film directed by David Fincher, is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel. Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris star in this hotly anticipated movie. Flynn also wrote the screenplay for the movie and many people were looking forward to seeing how the beloved book would translate on screen. The movie, whether you’ve read the book or not, is the most suspenseful and intense film to come out this year. Nick Dunne (Affleck) and his wife, Amy (Pike), have been…
