The siren still accepting student work

Del Mar College’s general interest literary magazine, “The Siren,” is currently working on a return after a five-year hiatus. Submissions from currently enrolled Del Mar students are being accepted through Friday, Feb. 14. Serving as a collection of visual and/or literary arts, The Siren stopped publication after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the Fall 2019-Spring 2020 edition, the magazine has remained dormant despite plans for an eventual return. Now, in Spring 2025, the plans are being actioned. How art and teaching has sculpted the life of a DMC professor

Art has always been a driving force in Del Mar College professor Gerardo “Jerry” Cobarruvias life. From his early years in Laredo with an artistic family to his eventual career, art in all forms has been present. Cobarruvias was born in Laredo, Texas, but grew up in Corpus Christi where he attended Del Mar and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He has been employed at DMC since 1985. Paws and Relax held on DMC campuses

Paws and Relax held their annual event at DMC Del Mar College students, faculty, and staff stopped by to “Paws and Relax” at a free pet therapy event at the Windward Campus on Nov. 19. Attendees had the opportunity to relax and reduce stress with the help of therapy dogs. The event featured therapy dogs from The GO TEAM and offered participants the chance to sit with the dogs, receive anxiety screenings, and engage in various stress relief activities. “The Siren” returning after a hiatus, submissions are being accepted now

Del Mar College’s student-led literary magazine “The Siren” is returning. After a four-year break, “The Siren” is now looking for artists and writers that wish to be featured in the upcoming issue. “We are excited to bring back ‘The Siren,’” said Allison Ehrlich, publications assistant for the Foghorn journalism lab. “It’s been on hiatus since the 2020 issue was released and the students have been eager to bring back the tradition.” Students and staff can submit photography, photo essays, drawings, paintings, digital art, short stories, poetry, and personal essays. Professor Frederick’s farewell production imminent

Del Mar’s very own Kim Fredrick will be retiring with his last show as a drama professor. Fredrick, a cherished figure in the drama department, is orchestrating the special production as a farewell to his long and impactful career. Professor Bob Long’s heart true to Del Mar Family

Bob Long always believed in being a part of and contributing to his community. In 2022, the community had the opportunity to give back to him. He was raised in the Del Mar area, “I grew up in this neighborhood right here by Del Mar, I went to Lexington Elementary in South Park,” Long explained. Journalism students win big title at TIPA
