Birthday banquet funds student scholarships

It was a night filled with the smooth sound of jazz and a feeling of giving back. Patricia Walter, chairwoman of the Communications, Languages and Reading Department at Del Mar College, used her 55th birthday to host a banquet to raise funds for scholarships. One of Walter’s favorite musicians, jazz saxophonist Tom Braxton, performed at the Feb. 5 event at the Center for Economic Development. Braxton was at the Music Department recently giving a clinic for instructor David Irving, and playing with the ensemble group. Vocal Vikings hit the beach

Although they normally travel one weekend a month to compete, the Vocal Vikings will get to stay home and play host to the competition with Speech on the Beach. Medical workers get lesson in Spanish language culture

Cómo te sientes? is a common phrase used by nurses and doctors. Those who attended a free Spanish for Medical Fields seminar, sponsored by Del Mar College’s Communications, Languages and Reading Department and designed to build attendees’ Spanish speaking and listening skills, learned that and much more at the Nov. 20 event. Some students were at the seminar to learn introductory Spanish but others were there to help build their knowledge of the medical field. Annual GIS Day set for Nov. 17

Teach up South Texas and take a BYTE of technology. The National Geographic Society, or NGS, has promoted geographic literacy in schools and communities and among organizations with a focus on educating the youth. This provides students within the area school districts, local residents and area professionals the opportunity to learn more about GIS applications and to see their use in action.
