Counseling Center holding annual therapy dog event
As the end of the semester approaches, so does the stress and anxiety that comes with finals. The Del Mar Counseling Center is hosting Paws and Relax Pet Therapy this week at the Windward and Heritage campuses. Valdar hits the runway with three new outfits
Del Mar College revealed three new outfits for its beloved mascot, Valdar the Viking, at a fashion show-styled event Nov. 3. Valdar, previously known as “the Viking,” was first unveiled in April 2017 after about a year of development, which saw the college work with David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic and owner of Raymond Entertainment. Drama students prepare to perform Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
Del Mar’s Drama Department presents Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” opening for a two-weekend run on Nov. 11. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Sue Sellors-Finley Theatre on Heritage Campus. Student Appreciation Night is Nov. 17. Any current student ID from any college of university in the area will allow students to redeem a free ticket at the box office and entrance to a reception afterward. Meet your Del Mar College Board of Regents
With candidates for the Districts 2 and 5 seats as well as the At-Large position running unopposed, the Del Mar College Board of Regents recently canceled the General Election. Each of the three Regents will serve for a period equaling six years, which will conclude in 2028.Nine regents serve on the Del Mar College Board of Regents. There are five district-based regents and four at-large regents. All of the territory that is under the jurisdiction of the Calallen, Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway and West Oso Independent School Districts is included within the boundaries of the Del Mar College District.…
Local outreach groups promote mental health and well-being at annual fair
Dozens of community groups packed the Harvin Center recently for a Halloween-themed health fair. Visitors to the Spooktacular Mental Health and Resource Fair on Oct. 27 at Heritage Campus could stock up on candy while finding out what resources are available locally. Sierra Zavala, with Coastal Plains Community Center, had a booth to let people know the center provides counseling services in the rural South Texas area, including San Patricio and Kingsville. Del Mar College dedicates ofrenda to family and staff lost during pandemic
In observance of Dia de los Muertos, the Center for Mexican American Studies constructed an ofrenda dedicated to Del Mar staff and family members who died during the COVID-19 pandemic. Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday coinciding with the Catholic holy days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which fall on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 respectively. It is believed that the souls of the dead are reunited with their families during this time. DMC hosts book signing for local author Diana López
Diana López met with students and staff to discuss Hispanic heritage and promote her new book, “Los Monstruos: Felice and the Wailing Woman” Over the past month, Del Mar College’s Center for Mexican-American Studies and the local branch of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education have hosted weekly events in observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
