Don’t spend a fortune to look like a million bucks

As a college student, it can be challenging to stay on a budget when you have basic bills such as rent, food, books and tuition. However, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for savings. In college, people start to be more mature and realize they don’t have much money and it’s a smart idea to cut on cost. Whether you are looking for something trendy or just for the current season, resale shops are a reasonable way to find fashionable items. “Our average client is college students and people in high school,” said Gabby Perez, who works at Closet Moderno. “You can find…

Executive Surf Club serves it up nice with fries

The Executive Surf Club is a well-known place in Corpus Christi. Located downtown on Water Street, it is known by Corpus Christi residents as a great hangout to eat, drink and enjoy local bands on the back patio stage. I went to the Executive Surf Club on a Tuesday for a quick bite before my afternoon workout. The restaurant was busy with local business people getting their afternoon lunch, but the line at the counter to order was tolerable. It took us five minutes to order. My workout buddy, aka my mom, and I decided to get something different and…

Yo Philly serves up tasty food and great experience

Samantha Douty and Jonathan Garcia sdouty@foghornnews.com jgarcia@foghornnews.com Samantha Douty/Foghorn  We love cheese. And we love meat. So when we heard there were two Yo Philly Cheese Steak and Subs locations in town, we had to try them both. The Foghorn sent a reviewer to each location to see how they compare. SAMANTHA DOUTY Yo Philly Cheese Steak and Subs is easy to get to once you get off the freeway just over the Harbor Bridge. It calls home the ever-changing storefront by Fajitaville on North Beach. The building is small, but it is the perfect size for the layout inside.…

Smokin’ sandwiches at Joint Venture

As I entered Joint Venture, a combination restaurant and head shop on Everhart Road near Ropers, I couldn’t help but notice the laid-back atmosphere. I also couldn’t help but laugh at some of the sandwich names on the menu behind the counter. Names such as Agent Orange and AK 47 made me smile, but I ended up ordering the O.G. Kush, a toasted sandwich with roasted turkey, Havarti cheese, tomatoes and lettuce with an apricot aioli. I also ordered water, which was served by the bottle in the cooler next to the register. After I grabbed my drink, I took…

Sandwich Shoppe on the island not a bad place to eat

Many people go to the island either to hit the beach, play mini golf or even check out the new Schlitterbahn. But it is also home to many casual places to eat, so I decided to check out Surfside Sandwich Shoppe, at 15113 SPID, with my father on a nice Sunday. The location could be hard to miss if you aren’t paying attention, so be on the lookout for it. We passed it and had to turn around in the Rock n Roll Sushi Bar parking lot. As we finally parked, we saw they had an outdoor patio area that…

Harvin Center proves to be a delicious choice

Sarah Fecht Reporter The food court, located downstairs in the Harvin Center on Del Mar College’s East Campus, is the place to go if you need a quick bite before heading to that next class. Any time I have ever gone there for a break, I am met with friendly staff and am able to check out with my food of choice quickly. Although it is small, the food court has a lot to offer, from a cup of coffee and light snacks to a variety of choices for a full meal. Usually, I will choose to get a…

Middle Eastern cuisines a taste of heaven

  C. Robert Gonzalez and Jonathan Garcia Reporters   More often than not many busy college students are faced with that overwhelming dilemma of what to have for lunch, and sometimes maybe even dinner. They may often choose to just grab something through a fast-food drive-thru. Sometimes these choices may also leave them more stressed and tired from the garbage they cycle through their bodies. Well this week we discovered a small gem right here in Corpus Christi. The Middle East Market & Deli is snugly tucked away on the corner of Curtis Clark and Everhart.  C.Robert Gonzalez/Foghorn. The Middle…

Beachfront restaurant perfect for a quick bite

Maria Garza Reporter   Many spring breakers at North Beach may find themselves craving a bite to eat. Fortunately, Pier 99, as its motto says, is “Just Right … on the Water.” Pier 99 Restaurant is located at 2822 N. Shoreline Blvd., between the Lexington Museum on the Bay and the Texas State Aquarium, and has the largest patio on the water in the Coastal Bend. Its specialty is seafood, of course, but there are also steaks and more. The first thing I noticed when entering is how the live music contributes to the ambience. There was not a wait…

Big Bowl Korean BBQ serves up smiles

Steven Martinez and Miranda Amey Reporters   Walking into Big Bowl Korean BBQ gives one the opposite impression of large at first glance. The few two-person and four-person tables, with two small tables out front, along with kids’ drawings pinned up near the entrance, lend an intimate atmosphere to the eatery. The restaurant, at the corner of Saratoga and Staples, offers a spin on the traditional grill standbys of beef, pork and chicken with a variety of sides and appetizers. Best of all, its prices make it perfect for students on a budget.     STEVEN MARTINEZ Upon…
