College can be stressful — especially toward the end of the semester — with students facing many challenges. One of the biggest challenges in Corpus Christi right now is finding an affordable place to live.
In Nueces County, there are 41 affordable housing properties providing rental assistance to 4,274 low-income families. Rental assistance is a type of housing subsidy that pays for a portion of renter’s monthly housing costs, including rent and tenant-paid utilities. All affordable housing programs through the government have maximum income limits to qualify for assistance. A family’s anticipated gross income determines not only eligibility for assistance, but also the rent a family will pay and the subsidy required. The rent a family will pay is 30 percent of the family’s monthly adjusted income. For example, a family of four cannot exceed $15,800 gross income for the year.
All households that include a member who is enrolled as a student at an institution of higher education will be required to provide additional information to determine eligibility. An applicant must also pass a screening process which may include credit, criminal and rental verifications.
Affordable housing is meant to assist families who need a place to live while they get their feet on the ground. The purpose of housing is to help families meet their needs and to achieve their goals. The goal is to provide safe, decent and supporting community for families. If this is the type of home you are looking for, apply at a HUD property near you.
