Students and staff took a dose of healthy competition to the Del Mar College gym basketball court in an epic inaugural “March Madness Showdown.”
On March 27 the madness began with the free-throw contest. With sign-up open to players and fans, the competition was fierce. As the competition narrowed down to the top scorers, Andres Garcia walked away the free-throw contest champion.
“It took hard work and consistency,” Garcia said of his win.
Finally, it was time for the teams to take the court, the Helm Holders versus Valdar’s Warriors. After four quarters of friendly competition, the Helm Holders took the victory over Valdar’s Warriors.
Helping his team to victory Gabriel Franco was named MVP of the inaugural showdown. “It took great teamwork,” said Franco humbly.

Villarreal’s determination impresses court officials, who donate nearly $3K As the first in her family to attend college, court reporting student Trysten Villarreal was determined to do whatever it takes to succeed. Her biggest obstacle was money. Fortunately, that determination was noticed by a local judge, who got together with others at the Nueces County Courthouse and were able to raise $2,800 toward Villarreal’s education. Villarreal’s parents, who encouraged her to follow her dreams, had originally talked Villarreal into applying for scholarships to help pay her tuition. She received two at first, one from her church, Christian Church of Alice,…
For many outside of the political mainstream, election season can often be somewhat of a drag. From the sudden influx of political association that seems only to emerge from usually unconcerned peers during this time of the season, to the timeless primetime classics that are the presidential debates. Nothing affirms one’s dissatisfaction with the current form of political commercialism and spectacle than the celebration of the nation’s semi-democratic process that serves as what the presidential debate has become.
