Students and staff took a dose of healthy competition to the Del Mar College gym basketball court in an epic inaugural “March Madness Showdown.”
On March 27 the madness began with the free-throw contest. With sign-up open to players and fans, the competition was fierce. As the competition narrowed down to the top scorers, Andres Garcia walked away the free-throw contest champion.
“It took hard work and consistency,” Garcia said of his win.
Finally, it was time for the teams to take the court, the Helm Holders versus Valdar’s Warriors. After four quarters of friendly competition, the Helm Holders took the victory over Valdar’s Warriors.
Helping his team to victory Gabriel Franco was named MVP of the inaugural showdown. “It took great teamwork,” said Franco humbly.

Staff-initiated drops now need secondary review Lexy Garcia / Reporter A new rule makes it tougher for teachers to drop a student from a class. Recently introduced as a new practice, any student who is withdrawn from a class by a professor is now placed under review by department chair before further action can be taken. Previously, a faculty member would go straight to the registrar’s office to withdraw a student. Staff-initiated drops will now be submitted and reviewed by the department chair, and a secondary review by the necessary dean, who will forward the drops to the dean of Student…
Haley Willams/ Chief Photographer When you walk into the office of David Irving, DMC professor of Music, you can’t help but notice the autographed photos lining the walls. All are of well-known jazz musicians and Irving is seen playing alongside those artists in most of the photos. Artists include Lou Marini, better known as Blue Lou, of the Blues Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, commonly referred to as one of the greatest trumpeters of the 20th century, and Lee Konitz, an American jazz composer and saxophonist. Since he began teaching at DMC in 1972, Irving has brought these artists and many more…
If you want to see a good horror thriller this weekend then “The Woman In Black” should be at the top of your list. The movie has been adapted from the 1983 novel written by Susan Hill. The movie is about a young lawyer, played by Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman who is terrozing the locals. As a fan of Daniel Radcliffe I will be waiting in line this weekend to see what he has to offer to his audience without the magic of his…
